I have an ancient Allis-Chalmers 5 foot rotary cutter, and have owned it for a few years. This year the mower has decided that it is going to start wrapping grass around the driveshaft when mowing tall grass. Is it possible (or safe) (or effective) to put a 4 inch length of PVC pipe over the driveshaft to avoid the wrapping? Thanks in advance for any help.

I think a company called Bare-Co will have a retro fit safety shield for that. That would be the best way to go and will prevent wrapping. As a last resort, the pvc may help, however will be noisy. Try carrying the front of the cutter higher, thus getting the pto up away from the grass better. Ken Sweet

Are you talk about the PTO drive line shaft? They make safety covers for them: 90SS5127 1540MM PTO SHIELD - Agri Supply

The ends are held in place, the shaft spins freely inside, the outer cover doesn't move but allows the shaft to move in and out (when picking up the mower or going over uneven ground).
