Hi guys. Haven't posted in a while, machine has been working flawlessly for years until we got over 30" of snow recently. I heard a snap and had no steering. I saw the shaft attached to the pitman arm (sector shaft) had broken off. I searched the forum and found the part number and the easy procedure for removal. Took out the four bolts on the side of the steering box, tapped out the shaft from the broken side. Out, quick & easy.
My problem / question is this - to remove the shaft from the housing (steering box side cover with 4 bolts) it looks like the threaded section with the screwdriver slot need to be screwed down all the way through the housing to remove the broken shaft. It stops and gets vey tight when it gets down to the housing. I got a die and made sure the threads were nice & clean. Nuts go on easy but it still binds when it is screwed down to the housing. Can I assume it must go down through the housing for removal? I'm almost ready to grind the crap out of the top of the threaded section so it will pass through easier but thought it prudent to ask if anybody has done this and can advise me. I'm concerned I might get it stuck with no way to remove it.
