After draining the oil I found the circlip in several pieces. Now I'm off to look for a replacement.

Excellent! So, is there a groove at the transmission end of the PTO Shaft?

Yes. I think it needs a 2.75" clip. Have to wait till Monday when the industrial supply places open.

I think I see a groove on the transmission (facing inside) end of the shaft (and a keyway?), but not on the outside end. There is a darker discolored ring on the shaft just to the outside of the outside end bearing but that does not look like a groove.

I don't see how having a clip in the groove on the inside end of the shaft is going to keep this from happening again. It keeps the shaft from being pulled out of the bearing.
It'd also need a circlip inside the transmission case, the size of the outer bearing race (plus groove depth) to keep the bearing from being pushed in. 2.75" sounds like that might be it though.

There's a groove at the yellow arrow, but we can't see inside the piece marked with the red arrow to see if there's one there also.

There is rust on the gear in one of the pictures and the transmission oil looks like it's starting to get milky. You drained the oil which is good. I wouldn't reuse it. Also if your shifters are on the top of the transmission housing make sure the rubber boots are in good shape as that's usually the first place for water to get in if the tractor is stored outside.

The yellow arrow is not a groove. Just a bearing retainer/lock nut with a locking tab washer. The red arrow is the bearing.

The part with the red arrow pointing to it looks like the outside of the outer race of a ball bearing. Assuming that's what it is, there needs to be something to retain that in the cases so it does not get pushed out again. It'd be an inside clrclip that fits into a groove in the case. It's hard to tell from the pics but the web that the bearing goes in looks just thick enough to hold the bearing and a clrclip groove.

Yes, the web hasa groove in it. I couldn't see it until I drove the shaft and bearing all the way in. I will see about getting my camera down into there and get a photo tomorrow.

Fortunately there is no rust. The inside case is painted red, you might be seeing reflections. Tractor is stored indoors and the shifter is a cable shifter, located up on the fender.

Found a circlip in town today and got it inserted. Now to put all the pieces back together.

Excellent! Now, what is the hole above for and would it be useful to add it prior to buttoning up.

I'm guessing it's for an additional PTO shaft that turns at a different RPM

The big hole above was empty when I disassembled the unit.
