Broken Pinion in 955 rear transmission

Hello,
I have started to repair my 955 which has a broken pinion shaft in the rear transaxle. Has anyone had any luck welding (tig?) these or should I just look for a new one? From Deere, the pinion and ring gear come as a set for a pretty penny. I was hoping for a cheaper alternative but also want a fix that will work.

Bummer. Might try to find a used combo from a parted out tractor.

Any idea how it happened, or what caused it to happen?

If you can find a good used set I would use them. If you can't then buy new. I don't think this can be welded in away that will be a good fix.

I was thinking I would probably have to find another one, but just wanted to see if anyone had any success with welding one up first.
As far as how it got broken, I don't know because that is how I purchased it. Because it is broken just behind the gear that turns the MFWD, I would assume someone slammed it in to 4wd when the rear wheels were spinning, or maybe too much traction/strain on the driveline on the front wheels while engaged in 4wd?

The part number is AM877016 and unfortunately it's only used on a 955. I googled the part number and came up with new $1200-1300. Pricy part. There were two used ones but no price given.

Thanks pmsmechanic, I ordered up one of the used ones, about half the price of new which seems to be the case with used tractor parts. I should have it here in a couple of days and hopefully up and running within a week of two. Unfortunately it is not the only thing wrong with the tractor, but definitely the biggest problem (I HOPE!)
