I purchased a used Rhino 10' brush hog last fall to use this year. I have broken the output shaft clean in to. There appears to be no rust on the shaft where it broke, but there are no stumps, just old rotten oak limbs out in the horse pasture. This is the second shaft I broke in two weeks. Yes, I broke the left shaft two weeks ago and tried to finish up limping along with two sets of blades. I can only assume there were stress fractures in the shafts when I purchased it and the third shaft will break as soon as it hits a blade of grass.
That's all neither here nor there. I'm attaching a parts diagram (Shaft is #17) and pics of the gearbox internals. How does the output shaft come out? I've removed the cotter pin and loosened the castle nut. Is the shaft supposed to be removed from below or does the horizontal shaft need to be removed first and the output shaft come up through the box itself?
Also, I have read it's not worth it to replace the shafts as all the bearings and seals need to be replaced and usually have to be pressed on. I am trying to determine if it's worth buying replacement shafts at $480 each.
Thanks in advance.
