Broken hydraulic fitting

Yesterday I had a beam fall down and hit one of the backhoe stabilizer fittings. My question is that the fitting is welded to the cylinder and it appears the threaded section isn't a separate part? Does the threaded section actually come out so it can be easily replaced or is this going to be a pita to fix?

I can't tell if the broken part is a short nipple. You're lucky if it is. I think you're going to have to break off the remaining threads and look inside the elbow and see if there are any threads present. If so; your first idea of removing the broken threaded section will be the way to go. Another way (still a PITA) would be to cut the "head" of the welded elbow off , as long as possible, and thread the stub if it close to a standard pipe size. Good luck.

It is the short threaded nipple part that is broken but instead of the being threaded into the elbow it appears to one piece...non-replaceable/repairable...I can't budge it with a good pair of vice grips...pretty bad design in my opinion.

I guess I'm going to have to take the cylinder off and see if I can carefully drill out the nipple and try to tap it to the correct thread size?

I would carefully cut the threaded nipple off & see if the ID of the elbow will take a NPT tap (1/4 NPT?) then a new threaded nipple.

If that doesn't work, (tap may not go deep enough, unless you take a little off the tap) I'd cut most of the 90 off and try to tap into the straight nipple sticking out, and thread a new 90 into it.

Well - - honestly, if it were ACTUALLY" "me" ... I'd whip out the Miller Synchrowave and weld a new elbow on without even messin' around with a thread tap.

I have just a regular Flux wire feed might but I'm just an amateur when it comes welding

I cut off the elbow and rethread welded nipple...now I'm having trouble finding the right size fitting. I need a female #6 orb to thread onto the welded nipple reduced to a male #4 jic

I must be missing something. It looks like most cylinders I've seen where there is a short straight female fitting of some sort welded to the cylinder and then a 90 or what have you threaded in. Are you say that they welded the 90 directly to the cylinder?

Man that's brutal. It seems like everything that gets "improved" now ends up being more costly and less reliable.

Yeah, I have seen that. A -4 or -6 JIC male 90-deg fitting welded to the cylinder. Nothing wrong
with that, and it allows for a very close 90-deg hose attachment, closer than you would get with
a straight welded bung, and a 90-deg fitting screwed on.

That 90-deg fitting is standard, common, and not expensive. I would weld a new one on there, but
cleaning all oil off is imperative, AND I always air-test before putting in service. Pinholes in welds
that get oil in them are hard to fix without starting over. It has happened to me numerous times.
