broke my tractor , battery was spent so we tried to pull start it. i was in the truck my son on the tractor. tractor was in low gear he poped the clutch, engine didn't start. so we went to the shop and got the cables and jumped it. it fired right up. but now it willn't engage the transmission . my son said there was a funny noise when we tried to pull start it. how much damage ya'll think we did and to what clutch, trans input shaft ,trans output shaft . i'm hoping we just striped a coupler. what do you think all response will be greatly appreciate.

My first impression is that you must have an old rusty clutch, and while you were pulling to start you might have destroyed the clutch disk. With 1700 you have only one clutch. There is outside chance that input shaft spline might be broken due to shock loading.

What does the tractor do when you push the clutch with the engine on and in some gear?

Can you push or pull tractor when the brake is off , gear in neutral and tractor not running?

You never try to pull start any thing in 1st gear. Use one of the higher gears. . If you poped the clutch while trying to pull start in 1st gear the shock load probably shattered a gear or two in the trans. Big $$$$

very simply you can take the transmission cover off to inspect the gear. need to take detent spring out first before you take the cover off. Below is the pic of my 1700 transmission with the cover removed.

This reminds me of a story my dad told me about 60 years ago. In the days cars had bumpers strong enough to be used to push another car. The neighbors car battery was down so he asked another neighbor if he could give him a push start. The other neighbor said, I have never pushed a car to start it before, how fast does it need to be pushed? The guy replied, about 30 MPH. So the one with the pusher car drove down to the end of the block, turned around and drove back at 30 MPH and slamed into the rear of the car with the dead battery. Needless to say he didn't get that one started either. True story by my Dad about 1954.

can you with the engine running, clutch out change the gears without any grinding? If so, then again you might have a totally disintegrated clutch disk, or you might have totally striped the splines on the transmission dive shaft. pull starting in the first gear is awful hard on the gears?

25+ years ago, I changed a clutch on Honda accord and used reman disk and pressure plate. I put all together and it could not move the car forward or back, clutch out and I could freely change gears and no go and no grinding. Took all apart again and took the reman disk to the store and they miced it and it was way out of spec. They were apologetic abut, but I ended up doing the job twice. Wasted two weekends and made $120... I could have worked less as a rent-a-cop for our apartment complex and made more money:(.

again, changing the transmission cover off is simple enough and you can inspect easily if you have busted gears. On my previous post I have a link to a post I made about 1700 transmission innards, it might help you some.

TXbovine,

On 1700 there is a clutch housing rubber cover/hand hole/inspection hole. By removing the cover, you can either have someone clutch for you or you can block it by a piece of 2x4. Then gear in neutral and a with a help of screwdriver you should be able to spin the clutch disk .. you might need a flashlight to help see inside. That might tell you some about the clutch at least.

JC,
