I hope he has a clutch disk like below. Although he still got to split but finding transmission gears and component might be a more difficult task along with splitting it the same.

by the way after 30 years of use, My clutch still has more than 90% of original lining thickness I guess I will not get a chance to split mine for a long time.

lol wow JC, yea that clutch is wasted. The diagnostinc step you suggested with the motor running, clutch out, and try to move it into gear and see if it grinds, or to push the clutch in and try to put it in gear should tell alot. I would think the clutch would blow before any gears would break. Lets pray for tex that a clutch is all he will need! I havent had to split mine either but the throw bearing has been singing for a couple of seasons, its only a matter of time. TB

I would guess you have broken an axle . Having it in low gear would prevent the engine turning over and the diff gears and low gearbox gears would be stronger than the axle . I would also guess it is the right hand side axle .

certainly a valid possibility. I supposed with smallish 1700 @ 2500 lbs and two wheel drive I suppose it slide the tractor on dirt before breaking the axle , specially axle at both sides.
