I was messing around pushing trees with my bota and broke off the street elbow on the tilt cyl. I tried everything to get the busted off piece out but with easy outs and even heat but no luck. This is an older tractor with old cyl. and was wondering if I could just weld a elbow on or should I drill out the nipple and re thread the nipple one size larger?? Would a welded on elbow hold the preasure?

Did you try to turn the stub with a chisel and a hammer? You can get a surprising amount of torque going without the expansion that you sometimes get with an easy out.

I can't help you with the other questions. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Are the fittings brass or steel? Brass can be brazed steel can be welded. I don't believe that you will get a good solid connection doing either of these.

I don't think drilling out and retapping to the next larger size will work either. You are probably 3/8 NPT now and going to 1/2 is a rather large jump.

I recommend that you remove the cylinder from the tractor and take it to a local hydraulic repair shop. They can probably help you get it done right and safe.

What I have done in the past is > Take a Dramel with a thin cut off disc, cut down the center of the fitting about an 1/8 to 1/4". Then take a punch and put it on on the O.D. of the fitting to one side of the cut. It will usually split. Don't cut any more than I said or your new fitting might not seal if it is a pipe thread.

Get you a left hand drill bit a little larger than the hole in the fitting and drill it out. Allot of times the bit will loosen the damaged fitting and the drill's power will screw it right out.
Fun eh!!

With all the drilling and cutting mentioned, remember that you also have to figure out how to get all the metal chips out of the hole also. I would just bite the bullet and have a machine shop do this for you. They have the tools and the know how and it will be cheap. Consider the cost of the chips doing damage to the cylinder or the pump by comparison. Drive a little..... save a lot. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
