Broadband in the country.

I haven't posted in a while. Been very busy with a promotion at work, putting up a pole building, and life in general.

Anywho, those of you that live out in the country (aka, "the sticks" for the city dwellers) a good approach to high speed internet is to sign up for WildBlue service. It took some time to get it installed (distance, installer with an attitude, an equipment availabililty), but the wait was worth it.

For $49 a month, you get 500kbs download and 128 upload. The equipment costs you $299 and if you are associated with a REA, you can get the installation free. Otherwise, the install is $179.

WildBlue has three tiers 500kbs, 1mb, and 1.5mb. The website is www.wildblue.com and they have a search link to find a local provider. It is a better alternative than dialup (duh!!) and cheaper than DirectWay.

You can attach a router to it and have a small household network.

DSL may be another option. I'm in the sticks and a little over 3 miles from a telephone switch. Free installation, $39/mo includes an ISP and nothing else to buy, (they throw in the modem). We've had it for 2 years and would never go back to dial up, (24K on a good day, we have very old copper....)
