i just put up a 40x70x14 pole barn and my problem is across the width of the barn the the ground drops off about 15 inches so the bottom of the barn siding is 3 inches above the ground on one side and 15 inches on the other side can i just backfill with sand inside to get up to grade and then top it with gravel the skirt boards are to the ground all the way around the perimeter so i think that will contain the sand

Welcome Gunyo. If your skirtboards are framed all the way up to the siding go for it.There's really no other way to do it.Mine was a foot out side to side as well, worked fine for me.;)
PS.Fill out your profile it comes in handy when answering questions.:D

I had same problem one corner was nearly 30" of fill required for my 50x50

so Used a compactable fill material sand gravel clay mix. make sure to compact the LIFTs no more than 6" of fill b4 compacting. water down & re-compact & add more fill after a setteling time is best but if using vib compactor then you can add lifts right on top but setting time is best if crete is going to be used...
