There is a 1/2" x 1" hole in the side of the engine (blown out from the inside) and I can look through ans see that there is nothing connected to the crankshaft.
Is my engine toast?

In a short answer, yes. Most likely lack of lubrication failure which resulting in the rod seizing to the crankshaft which in turn broke, and went through the side of the block.

I figured. There was enough oil. I've checked that regularly ever since I let it run dry and it seized up two years ago. I pounded down the piston with a big hammer and a chunk of 2x4 and got two more years but it was living on borrowed time.

You did well to get two years after the damage from two years before.
