I've purchased a few brand new Kawasaki, Can-Am, and Suzuki machines over the last 5 years. ALL of them have stated in the owners manual that proper break-in is critical to engine life.
I don't always think that if it's in the manual it's great advice but in this case I don't see why it would even be in the manual to start with if it wasn't important.
