Regardless of what your "experts" say, follow the guidelines in the Operator's manual. The NH engineers that designed the tractor, and set up maintenence schedules, and oil specifications certainly know better than anyone else what is best.

If in doubt, if you follow the manual, then, should a problem occur, you have the defense that I followed the instructions to the letter.

Thanks Birdman. I stopped by the dealer today and they said "don't do it" (the 20 hour engine oil change I had planned) so I guess I won't.

This will be the first piece of equipment I ever owned, including my cars and trucks, that I didn't do a very-early first oil change.

I am like you in that I like to perform a 500+/- mile oil change on new engines. I am always looked at funny and asked why I would waste my money doing this. Simple, get the shavings, dirt and crud from manufacturing out.

Some years ago I purchased my first (and only) new motorcycle, a high performance four stroke dirt bike (KTM 400 RXC). The manual was very clear that you should not change the original oil for xx hours. The reason given was that it was a special type of oil to help the rings and such seat properly. I believe they referred to it as a mineral oil and it did have a different viscosity from the oil that I used on subsequent oil changes. Now the manual was written in German and translated to English so there may have been something lost in translation. After that, the dealer recommended that I use synthetic motor oil. This may be a similar issue with the NH tractors.

Can anyone in service let us know what oil is used in new NH engines?

Factory fill oil is a different oil than you get over the counter and it is ment to be run for the first 50 hours. Forget the "experts" and go with your operators manual' service chart. I deal with the aftermath of " A guy told me to " all the time and have yet to see one step up when their advice has caused a problem.

Interesting point about the oil, whitetiger, and that is one I never even considered. My panel of experts is not expected to "step" up, really, just advise and keep me on the right track in keeping the new and ancient machinery around here working well, hopefully the ancient will provide most or the problems. With their help, I got the 26 year old troybilt tiller humming this spring and have kept the 24 year old wheelhorse crooning as well. If the tractor lasts as long as those machines, it certainly won't be my problem LOL.

I am surlely no oil expert or service expert.

On my Kubota B7100 it got it's first oil change at about 7 hours. Used 30 weight premium grade diesel oil. This soon changed to 15/40 premium oil. That was 2400 and some hours ago. Still does not use any oil between changes. I now change oil about every 75 hours or fall and spring whichever comes first.
