This probably is a dumb question but I didn't think much of it until now.

I got a jump start on my 50 hr maintenance and changed the engine oil and filter.

My dipstick has 6 marks on it and from the first day I owned it the engine oil goes to the 6th mark, so I assumed that was the full mark. I drained the oil and replaced with 6 liters as my manual calls for... which converts to approximately 6.34 quarts plus a little extra for the filter. The oil now only goes to the first mark.

Was the oil overfilled before or is the manual wrong? Are all dipsticks like this one? My dealer is a long distance call so thought I'd try here first.

Thanks for any replies.
Confused
Ron

Not a dumb question at all. I was wondering the same thing.
And I've had my Century for 2 years!
Where is the full line?

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I, too, am wondering about the dipstick. And wondering if a little bit over is okay.

My 3510 just turned 50 as well. I carefully added about 6.3 quarts of oil... And now the level is ABOVE the top mark. My Dad says being a little over full should be no problem, but his experience comes from large equipment like bulldozers, graders, and log skidders -- some of his advice is iffy for a CUT.
The manual says fill to anywhere between the highest and lowest lines, if I remember correctly.

You guys are doing better than I am!
I ran into the same thing, but after refilling, I found that there are NO marks on mine.
That left me wondering, but I just added the specified amount and hoped for the best.

My dealer talked to Branson and Branson said fill to the top(6th) mark with about 7 1/2 - 8 quarts oil.

That tells me that the manual is wrong then or somebody is using fuzzy math. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif So 7 1/2 to 8 it is.

you know guys, I hate to say this, but I was sitting here reading the posts again, and I just started laughing! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is fast becoming a comedy!

1 mark, 6 marks, no marks, 2 holes, what's up with this?
