Brake dust - tired of it!!

Yep get ceramics. They stop better and dont make the black dust. They have been OE on some cars as far back as the late 90's. I beleive my 96 saturn had them. I put them on my ranger as well. If yall would quit walking into the parts stores and order off line you can find ceramic pads for much less than the big box stores. Or if you use coupon codes from places like advance auto.com. Just google or click the links. The code big30 at advanceautoparts will get you $30 off $75. P20 is good for 20% off any purchase on line. You can buy online and if you buy more than $75 advance ships free or you can pick it up from the store if u like.

But i always use these codes or buy from rockauto dot com. They will always have a 5% off code if you google rock auto coupon code you will find it. But rockauto always has closeouts or buys parts from a closed store etc. I got cermic wagner pads i belive for my saturn for less shipped than i could buy the cheapies from the advance or autozone stores. When i redid my ranger brake system i bought and had deliverd new shoes chepies, ceramic pads, 1 caliper, new wheel cylinders all for less than the cheap pads and shoes would have cost me at advance. I think it was like $55 shipped to my house. The other thing is that you have a greater choice of name brands than if you walked into advance that has its house line and maybe a top line name brand(of couse there house are made by a big company though), but you can often get the big name better quality line pads here for the same or less than goining into one of the big 3 stores. I have 4 vehicles that i maintain so i have to get the best deal possible.

I have been using the Wagner Therma-Quiet pads from O'riellys on all of our vehicles. They are about 60 bucks per set but I have taken advantage of the lifetime warranty before and they replace them free no questions asked. They are very good pads to say the least and I have noticed very little dust on the wheels with them.
.

+1 for the Wagner Thermoquites, about $60 at autoparts stores or you can find them for $45-50 online.

I have Akibono pads all the way around on my Dodge Ram and on the front of my Surburban. They are a lot cleaner than OE pads. Kleenwheels work well also but I would recommend against them if you use your truck for towing or hauling heavy loads. Kleenwheels reduce the airflow to the brakes raising the brake temperature under load.

I was thinking the same think about the dust shield things as it will not cool the rotors as fast. Only a problem in city stop and go but more so in moutains and towing like said earlier.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will do some more homework before I decide what pads to get. It won't be too long before my F150 will be needing a brake job.

Used my GMC for towing a 7000 lb TT many thousands of miles, never experienced any loss of braking power while using the Kleenwheels but I am sure they do reduce airflow to the rotors somewhat. My truck is a 3/4 ton so the brakes are huge which may have been a factor in not experiencing any fade.

However, don't most heavy trailers have their own braking system?

I'm tired of having to keep wiping the brake dust off of the alloy rims on my truck. I think there are some disc brake pads that create very little amounts of brake dust, compared to the usual brake pads that you find in 90% of the parts stores. I have been told that NAPA makes a set, but they are pretty pricey like about $80 a set. Anybody know of some brake pads that generate very little (or no) black dust and don't cost an arm and a leg?? Thanks.

Are you riding them hard?

Good information Clemson! I will take your advise and order on line next time. Thanks!

Dust doesn't necessarily equate cheap.

All European Cars have this issue... especially noticeable on High end cars like BMW and Mercedes.

Some have used Dust Shields and found a noticeable reduction.

The high performace pads often found on those cars are known for creating lots of dust because they grip much better. were grip= wear=dust.

but yes as others have said... dust shields that go between the rim and the rotor are the easyest way to significantly reduce dust buildup on rims.

Yes, they do. Folks often forget about this fact when they want to tell you that your truck is too small to tow (and stop) a trailer. If the trailer brakes fail or if the nut behind the steering wheel doesn't know how to use them then the truck's brakes could be doing extra work.
