Nice mix of birds you've got there! My wife raises layers as a hobby. I think I'd find the hobby more enjoyable if she didn't start them in the living room or my shop! One year she started them in my office at home and my poor computer sucked all those tiny pin feathers inside and shorted out! We sent it back to Dell for service and a week later received a call asking if we had any idea how our computer got filled with feathers!

Sent my Wife to TSC to pick up a landscape rake. She got the rake along with 2 ducks and a dozen chickens. I almost fell over. Like I don't have enough to do already.
Oh honey....I'll take care of them, build a pen, chicken house...yada yada yada... Phhhhhtttt..... So far She hasn't built two 3x5 holding pens or fenced off a 20x30' area. Don't think She'll build the coop either.
Anyone have some plans for one? I don't know squat about taking care of these things. I've looked at a few plans on the internet for a henhouse/coop/chicken house or whatever you call them.
btw.....Aren't ducks supposed to LIKE water??? It was about 90 deg the other day and the ducks were panting. We had five sandbags sitting around so I arranged them in a circle, put white plastic down and filled it with water. Hey the ducks will like this....yea right! They screamed bloody friken murder when I put them in there. For crying out loud...thier DUCKS. The one duck calmed down after a minute and started garlgin water etc... but got out about 10 seconds after I moved out of the way. The other duck couldn't get out fast enough.

There are loads of small chick house plans on the web. A search should turn up several. Just make sure its designed/situated in a way that predators and dogs cant gain access.
As gws said the rest is pretty easy..feed in etc. Oh, make sure the chicks get plenty of water in the summer when its hot...otherwise youll be chickless in no time. Get a proper chick waterer as theyll foul water in a pan quickly. Chicks are rather (amazingly) messy. Oh, and youll need to keep the enclosure clean or itll stink. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Is this all sounding fun? I think theres no difference between getting a couple chicks and 50...its all about the same work. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Actually, I like chicks alot. The next bunch I get will be all Orpingtons.

Yea thier messy alright. We had them in the basement in a large plastic storage container for a couple weeks. Found out pretty quick we needed to seperate the ducks and chickens. The ducks splash water everywhere soaking all the bedding. Then the chickens end up soaked and covered in stuff. They were ok for 2 days but would start to smell on day 3.
Thier about 4 weeks old now and started staying outside this week, Thank God! The chickens all have thier feathers but the ducks are still fuzzy. They have a few feathers though and started to quack a little this week. They were, still are, chirping like chicks for the most part. Thier little quacks sound more like the geese that fly over than a duck quack though, still learning I guess.
