I'm thinking of a mod for my box blade, and would like to pole for solutions:

My home is on a 1 mile dirt road shared by 6 homes. Speed is a problem, and we get pretty bad washboards in places. I'm the only tractor owner, so I maintain the road, and have no back blade. (I KNOW, buy the right tool for the problem :( BUT I like unique solutions - I can't help it, I'm a retired engineer! :D)
The box blade tends to either 'bounce' over the humps or gouge deeply, depending on how the 3pt lift is set; Both a PITA. My idea is some change in linkage that would allow me to angle the blade fore & aft (while keeping the blade parallel to the ground!) allowing the blade to shave the humps similar to an angled back blade.
Has anyone tried such an arrangement? And how did you set it up.
Ideas welcome,
Thanx

If you don't have any weight added to your box blade, you could use a few hundred pounds. Going at a moderate to slow speed with the sides of the box just off the ground so that only the actual blade is on the ground will also help.

Have the 6 other residences pitch in and buy one of these or similar if you don't like KK stuff. I don't think you can angle your box blade the way you mentioned (of course, somebody on here has probably managed to do that somehow)...

Thanx guys, several good ideas that I've drooled over - may have to finally bite the bullet! Either that or buy a welder & learn to use it - chance for a new toy, 'er ... .TOOL!
Jerry - I do have weight - added an old 240# set of lifting weights to the original 350 +/- of the 5' BB.

Best thing I have found for grading gravel roads is a good york rake. With the rake angled at speed it will gather and distribute material with a good smooth finish. Also it will drag matrerial from the road edge to the middle where you can run a pass withthe rake straight and distribute teh raod bed material evenly.

I used this method on a 3 mile long 24ft wide drive To passes each side to get the material where it was needed and three more to level. Done

I would make sure the road is a little soft, maybe after a light rain, add some suitcase weights, I hang 4 cast iron 50#'ers off the back and it works great...I got some used John Deere ones real cheap...

Your problem is that the box only weighs 350 pounds. You should have gotten a HD box for a mile of road. I have a Gannon box that is 66" wide and weighs 980 pounds. It's still too light for some road things when it's dry.

6 homes. that is a good amount of folks. i would be contacting the local "township" for your area. they would be responsible for the road. or less everyone on the road is paying you to deal with things. if not township then it would be left up to either city or county level. to maintain the road.

around here there are small little townships, one person per township maintains the township roads. while county maintains county roads, and state maintains state roads or highways at least around me.

if you are just doing it, on your own out of neighborly doing. i would say ask for money. to get the implements or what ever is needed. or double check with township. to see about getting some funds. or keep on the township to maintain the road correctly so you do not have to.

i know above sounds like money grubbing. but it is an issue that should be solved.

i have seen rear blades, with some sides place on them via welded on, kinda like a box blade has sides.

contact local tractor dealers and machinery places (phone book = machinery rental) and see what it would cost to rent a given attachment. to get the road back into shape, then use box blade to maintain it.
