I'm guessing it's not just a matter of driving in 4WD on pavement and binding up the gear train as the difference between the "lead" on the front wheels (typically a few % higher ground speed than the rear wheels) can "wind up" the gear train when driving on surfaces that don;t allow some slip. If that's the case, try backing up a a few feet or more, if your last movement was forward (or vice versa). Also best to avoid tight turns in 4WD when driving on surfaces which don't allow some slip of the wheels.
Usually, this can bind up shifting out of 4WD, but I've had it bind up my range shift as well.
