Worktrak 204
Hiya new to the boards,new to a diesel tractor,new to Chincom Tractors:thumbsup:
I bought a 1999 Worktrak 4x4 with a TY290 2 cyl engine,it came with several implenments and was a steal(or at least I thought so at the time).It ran good during the test drive(smoked some,but it stopped).Anyways now it is acting like it losing power/starved for diesel.It actually quit once,but ran again about 20 minutes later.Soooo,any suggestions besides me putting a for sale sign on it??? Also looking back thru the board on 08-22-2008,there was mention that the TY290 engine is no longer being made,so yes I am a tad nervous about parts,lol

Naw, there's still parts available. Online that is, can't speak for brickfront. Anyway. What does the temperature gauge say as it starts to splutter and quit?

Ok, that's a start. How about the air filter? Besides staying within operating temperature, a diesel can't run without fuel or air. So let's move on to air. Before investing in a new air filter, simply remove the one that's on there. See if the stalling/stopping issue persists. If nothing else, we may get to the bottom of this - as a matter of elimination.

yup it'll run without the air filter in....this tractor sat up for a fair amount of time(I bought it from the owners widow)if it had air in the lines would it make it stavre for power?

Ok, dirty air filter. That was a reasonably inexpensive fix. If it takes the same filter as my 3 cylinder, it's about $20 at NAPA. If you lived close, I've got a spare you could have cheap. And if it had air in the lines, it wouldn't start.

As Greg said change the air filter and then tackle the fuel system. Cleaning all feel screens starting with the one in the tank and another in the fuel line by the injector pump. Must remove fuel bowl and fuel line between tank and injrctor pump to do. I would also flush the tank and install a new spin on fuel filter. My guess is crap in the fuel system from the lay up time.

I wonder if we're talking about the same filter. Got a part number? I'd be deathly afraid the intake vacuum on a diesel would try to ingest a five dollar filter.

I agree with Greg. I don't honestly see how any company could make a profit if they sold a heavy-duty diesel air filter with the turbulating whirlygig for only five bucks.

That $5 filter could get really expensive as it went through the combustion chambers. I think I'd prefer to get an OEM filter from Tommy, or whatever he recommends.

The filter number is Purolator A42019
I have been using this brand of filter for 5 years never had a problem with them .

I crossed over all my filters years ago at Advanced Auto to stock filters. The ones I get are Purolator A42019 and they are high quality. Like stated above they are about $5. I have 5 sitting on my shelf right now. I order them 6 at at time at that price. I wondered if they were not priced wrong or something last time I got them also but the price has been the same for years.

Here is what I have used since new on my 2003 Jinma 284

Air= Purulator A42019
Oil= Fram PH3950
Fuel= Fram P6503

If Chris and Bob say that filter will work, I'm sure it will. Neither of them would take a chance on their equipment.:thumbsup:

It's not the part number that I'm contesting, it's the price. Chris' Purolator also crosses over to Wix 42276 & Napa 2276 among others, none of which sell for $5. I've seen them as high as $35 in some places. I can't for the life of me understand why Advance can sell the same filter for 1/3 to 1/7 the price of their competitors. A $5 filter simply speaks to a different build standard

I wouldn't argue with that, Greg.

We all know that no matter what you build, someone somewhere will figure out a way to make it cheaper and undercut the price. Almost always by the sacrifice of quality. It's fashionable to blame third-world manufacturers for this, but the real blame lies with the companies specifying only price point, not build quality. The consumers are the ones who suffer, unless they are knowledgeable enough to evaluate the quality of the product.

Since I don't have the knowledge to evaluate the inner workings of some of these things, I rely on knowledgeable dealers like Tommy, Ronald, Chip and others to do the due diligence for me. So far I haven't had any unpleasant surprises.

I understand that Greg. I am not sure what is going on here. I have found the same filter other places around the $25 price point but for some reason Advanced is cheap on it.

I have no clue why but like I said I am stocked up on them.
