Back in the day, when working a fire, having a sharp short handled axe was the only way to go. Lighter than a chainsaw, and always worked. Like ArlyA says, you can cut through a tree pretty fast with a nice sharp axe. I used to have a double headed one, one side was kept sharp, the other i'd sacrifice to work on stuff in the dirt. It got lost in a fire that flared up and took off with me running in the opposite direction.
