Boredom... what\'s that?

I'm curious, when was the last time any of you were bored?

I myself can honestly say that I haven't experienced a period of boredom since I was a kid. I hear friends talk about being bored from time to time and having to find things to do but I just can't relate. Between working 50-60hrs a week and having property to maintain/improve I never am short of activity. I would imagine that most/all of the folks on this board feel the same way. Maybe I just know too many apartment dwellers...

Re: Boredom... what\'s that?

I have a terriable BOREDOM problem, every night I lay awake thinking of what I have to do and the things I didn't get done the day before...

Let me think...... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Oh yeah, I know!

I had borrowed my brother's car to visit a girlfriend. On the way home, I got a flat tire and it was in the middle of a snowstorm. He didn't have a spare tire, so I had to wait for some help to come along. The radio in his car didn't work. I waited for one and half hours until a deputy sheriff finally showed up.

That was 1968! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Yup. That was the last time I can remember being bored! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Man, that's a tough one. I don't think I've been bored at any time in the last 25 years. Further back that that I can't remember. I'm getting to that age, you know. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I can see where I might be bored if I was stuck in the house because of filthy weather outside with no wife to talk to, no inside honey-do's to attend to, the radio and TV were both broken, all the books, magazines and catalogues had been thrown out, no dogs to play with, no shop to go piddle in, the computer was on the fritz and I had no "planning" to do for tomorrow or next week. Yup, I can see where if that all happened, I might get bored enough to go into the kitchen and cook a gourmet dinner for two that would surprise the everloving heck out of my wife. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Needless to say that day hasn't come yet.

I think that people who are healthy and mobile who say they are bored, are probably just too lazy to get off their butts and do something. Now don't get me wrong, I like to kick back in my recliner as much as the next guy, but as I explain to my wife, that's where the "planning" part comes in. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As long as you keep your mind active, I don't see where you can possibly be bored.

Re: Boredom... what\'s that?

Going on vacation soon, actually hoping to be bored a bit. Not likely that will happen as there will be many things to see and do in our travels /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh agreed... just because I'm lying on the couch with the boob tube on doesn't in any way mean that I'm bored, just means I'm relaxing!
/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

edit: I drive my wife freakin' nuts when we'll be sitting on the tailgate of the pickup and she'll be talking about "what a lovely house and property that we have and don't the horses just look so graceful out there grazing and..."

And I'll blurt out "jeez, we really need to repaint the trim this summer".

They'll never understand us and we'll never understand them. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Boredom... what\'s that?

I don't generally get bored...

But if I had to say when I do...well I guess wedding services and funerals come to mind... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Bill,

I guess that just shows why we're all different. I'm always fascinated at weddings and funerals. Not necessarily for the primary reason we're at the particular function. I find watching people fascinating. It's amazing what you see people do (or don't do), how they react (or don't react), or who or what they're watching.

Maybe this interest for me goes back to when I was in college and had the foolish notion that I might be successful in the theater. I used to spend hours just studying how people walked, moved, reacted, and just plain ol' lived to get information on how to play a certain type of character.

So for me, I'll never get bored as long as there is someone around to watch! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Boredom... what\'s that?

I guess I need to know if there is a difference between bored and antsy.

The month I waited for the tractor delivery I was bored. My mind was going a mile a minute but I wasn't.

Sitting at a restaurant waiting for a two year old and a four year old to actually finish eating. A task that takes forever since they seem to be follow Gary's lead and just people watch instead of eating. Wife won't let me just scoop them up so yeah, bored to tears.

Visiting the in-laws for dinner. They have some kind of genetic defect that causes them to chew in slow motion. My father-in-law can spend hours eating a slice of meat. My only activity is side bets on when the kernel of corn is actually going to fall off his lip and where it will land. Insanely bored.

Any conversation with my Mother-in-law can lead to mind numbing boredom.

So yeah, I guess I have been bored. Not since tonight at the restaurant but often enough.

Not so much the boredom for me, but the thought of a more productive use of my time.

Yep, that's the two things I hate to attend myself, and I had to go to a funeral last week, and now another one tomorrow. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I always hope for the same thing too on vacation, but my Type-A wife prevents that from happening!
