Bobcat 743
I bought an 85 Bobcat 743 "not running - as is" for $3250.00. It shows 457 hours on the clock.

This was a trade in at a dealer in 2001 when it showed 250 +/- hours. The mechanic at the dealership called a buddy to inform him of the "exceptional" piece of equipment that came in. The second owner used the loader for maintaining a stone driveway on a hill. The loader was parked about two years ago and sat due to the purchase of a tractor more suitable for the maintenance. After two years it would not start.

After purchasing this, I started with a thorough cleaning. The tires have about 20 hours on them (if that) and the oil filter read 2004 341 hours. All of the pins looked tight and the engine paint original and not too shabby. I started thinking the hours may be legit.

I charged the battery and found the fuel line was pinched between the starter and the block (previous owner said they worked on it trying to get it to start before selling it). The previous owner also said the starter was bad and they removed it to check it without a load. This explains the pinched fuel line. I tried cranking her over and it seemed very labored. I also notice oil spilling from the blower housing. The oil cooler was corroded (probably from sitting in the woods for two years).

I replaced the oil cooler and the starter. She fired right up (after priming the fuel system). I also serviced the entire fuel system and changed the engine oil and filter, etc. prior to starting the loader. I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the engine. It was the belt burning on the non-spinning alternator, hence the drag and eventual demise of the starter. Replaced the alternator and viola, she ran great! No smoke from the engine and loads of power! I am beginning to think the hours are correct. Sitting equipment is tough on everything such as hoses, seals, etc. This leads to my next issue, the axle seal.

The front left axle seal is leaking enough to wet the wheel after two minutes of use. I read the manual on the procedure to correct this. Special tools are needed. Does anyone have suggestions on where to get the parts and tools or should I just trailer her down to the local Bobcat dealer. What costs am I looking at? Also, what would it cost for them to replace all of my hydro hoses and is this a good idea? Sorry for the long post. I do my own work, but I have also found it wise to turn it over to a pro in some circumstances.

Nice find!

I have been looking for a project 743/753/763/773 for a long time, without
luck. (I have looked at 2 cheap 753s, but they were in horrible shape.)

The parts you need are easy to get, but I would not get hoses from BC. Get
pre-made standard-length hoses from someplace like SurplusCenter. As for the
special tools needed....you can often find a work-around, or make the tool.

The trickiest part of the seal replacement is getting the seal in place after the axle has been reinstalled. The outer bearing is press fit to the axle so you cannot put the bearing and seal in first then side axle through, lip of the seal will likely get damaged before getting the axle lined up and through the inner bearing and sprocket. The seal installing tool lines the seal up with the axle tube and presses it in place as you put the axle in. I have done this without the tool but takes great care to work that seal in without bending it. Try to find a large split/hinged washer to go over the axle behing the seal to pry on, lube the metal part of the seal with permatex, use 2 thin pry bars at the same time working around the seal to get it into place.

Thank you both. Any suggestions on where to get the seal kit? Should I do all four while in the chain case?

Once you get the axle out and bearing off you will find numbers on both bearing and the seal, most any auto parts or equipment parts should be able to match those numbers to correct bearing and seal. check the surface of the axle to make sure the seal hasn't rubbed a groove in it, if it has there are speedy sleeves that fit.
I wouldn't bother with all 4 seals yet unless another starts leaking soon. Drain the chain case and refill with clean hydraulic fluid.

Well I pulled the axle. Wow it took some force to get the axle out. My porta power and a big hammer did the trick. The manual was not very helpful. Does anyone know how to set the bearing pre-load?

Well I got her all back together. Splitting the old outside bearing race provided me the tool to "work" the seal into the axle tube. I simply put the split race between the axle hub and the new seal. The split race was held in place with a hose clamp. After sliding the axle in I was able to run the nut on a little at a time as I worked the seal in with a small pry bar prying on the split race.

Everything worked great for about 15 hours, then a hose burst. The end of the hose is under the control valve and NOT accessible. The only way I see to remove the hose is to pull the engine and the pump assembly!! Any suggestions? I am ready to replace ALL of the hoses as I can see the others look a bit shabby. Help please.

G'day 743.
I have just replaced the hose you talk about ,the one on the bottom of the control spool bank if you undo the hard steel pipes that are in the way and take out the fittings that go directly into the main spool this will give you access to the hose , not a nice job but doable, good luck.
Hutch.
