I got a comment in the mosquito thread about picking Blueberrys already so here are pics.
I have about 12 large bushes and I have picked about 1 1/2 gallons so far this year. I have picked up to 4 gallons in the past, I might make that if the birds don't beat me to them.

Wow! Where did you find a dime that small? :) I wish my berries grew that large.

Good looking berries you got there.

I have ten bushes and usually pick the first batch on July 4th of each year then make blueberry ice cream for the family.

We had a blueberry farm in Louisiana before we moved to Arkansas. Usually we would average about 5 gallons per bush. It is our intent to plant a small patch (about 1/2 acre) in Arkansas. That will be plenty for kids, grandkids, neighbors, and bears. In Louisiana we were not bothered by the deer but the birds liked them.

What variety is that? Good looking berries.

I've been picking blueberries for about 3 weeks now but my bushes are small and produce very few berries. I wish I could get even 1 gallon per bush.

My apples are almost ripe now. I think I should have thinned them out on the tree because the tree is too small to support them.

If I depended on farming for a living, I would have gone bankrupt a long time ago. :(

Tally - - what kind of apple tree is that? & how long has it been in the ground? I showed your pic to my wife & she is jealous! We have what we think is a Granny Smith that has been planted about 10 years - - it has a handful of apples on it. Usually the squirrels get there 1st. And we've planted a few more apple trees in the last couple of years - - an Anna, a Golden Dorsset, a Yates & an Ein Shemer. I expect it will be a few years before these produce, but your tree looked pretty small, so maybe there's hope sooner. I take it that this is about the time of year apples mature in this part of the country??

Oh, just so I don't totally hijact this thread, I've been picking blueberries for a couple of weeks. In about a week we'll be swamped with them.

Tally: Blueberrys like acid soil, have a soil test done and if the pH is higher than 5.5, you need to add something like horticultural sulpher to lower the pH.

I still have about 2 weeks before i can pick blueberry's.

We have been getting a lot of strawberry's.....and the raspberry's are just now starting to get ripe....It will be over a month before i can pick blackberry's.

How do you all keep the birds out of your blueberry's???

I put coffee grounds around my blueberry's and that puts acid in the soil.

Those apples look fine to me. I have seen small trees like that with 3-4 times that much on easily.

Some folks train the trees into a weeping shape by tying bricks to the branches as they grow. That way the limbs don't break when they bend down with the weight of all the apples, as they are used to growing like that.

I got that tree at Lowe's a few years ago. I believe it is an Anna. It was about 5' when we planted it year before last and it had 3 apples 6 months later. Last year it had about 10 apples and this year we counted 30 apples, though they are rather small.

I did a ph test and it showed about 5.5. A little lower would probably be a little better.
