Blower vs Plow

Having owned both (plow/blower) they both have their place for different types of storms. If you have a rear blower & like it, dont ever operate a front blower!

I would let your tires make the choice for you. If you have loaded R1's then a plow would be very effective. Unloaded R4's or turfs and you would best go with a blower as you will not develope enough traction force to push much snow. Loaded R4's with chains would also be effective on a plow. With 1000 ft of driveway I would put either implement on the front.

454- you are close to perfect with that rig, but what you need is a V plow on the front instead of the one -way plow in the picture. I Don't have a picture of it right now, but I'm using a Allis-Chalmers D-10 with a home made V plow built out of 2 old gravely walk behind plows, on the front, and a Woods 60" 2 stage single augur blower on the back. I find that 90% of the time the V plow will clear my 800 + feet of driveway, and the blower is more or less a counterweight. The advantage for me in having the V plow is that the tractor always runs straight, and the plow doesn't try to steer you away from the snow you are pushing. One good thing about buying a snowblower is that you won't have any snow that you can use it in for 5-7 years!

Does tire selection make a difference? Are chains necessary? I suppose you need more "grip" with a plow as opposed to the blower.

Ed, if your equipment is working at all on a paved driveway you should be on blacktop after you clean!!!! I actually find that the turf tires work just fine for snow removal in all conditions.

For farmers that like to drive thru deep snow yes ag tires and possibly chains for icy conditions might be the best and the industrial tires are just to ungiving to be really good in snow much at all.
The turf tires are very flexible and give the most amount of ground contact or snow contact to give traction. You need more traction with a plow no doubt!!

I plowed snow with turfs on my JD for six years and they did a good job.

Turf tires worked well for me in snow on both my B7500 and my B3030.

I have to push all my snow to one side as I have an embankment on one side and a down slope on the other. I also have a rear hydraulic tilt 8' blade and can use both plows together which cuts around a 10' swat. I also chain all 4 tires on the 3720. My drive is 3/10th of a mile and 25' wide and probably around a 15% grade.
