(Blog) Something I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy

I'm 3 weeks out now from a hernia surgery and all I can say I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. The recovery pains are far worse then the injury itself. The pains will go away in time but WHEN... I won't go into details but all I can say is I have never felt pain like this in my life. When I broke my wrist the first of this year it didn't hurt as bad nor when I broke me leg 3 years ago. I felt like someone with combat boots on kicked me you know where about 3 times everyday for the first few days after the surgery. For the first week I couldn't even sit up much less walk. For the first week I was eating pain pills like M&M's. For those of you that have gone through this you know where I'm coming from. I hope I never or any of you have to go through this in your life.

You sound like active kind of person...lot of get up and go...and that to will add to long recovery time...tic..tic..tic...broke my leg on May 29th of this year and now just getting use to the cane...speedy recovery wish to you.

Randy, I had hernia surgery a few years ago. We went with the spinal block, or epidural I guess they call it, instead of a general anesthetic so I was able to watch the surgeon do it (that big stainless steel light fixture over the operating table makes a good mirror). I later told the surgeon I was sure glad I had watched him do that surgery because if I hadn't been watching, I'd have sworn he left a knife in there. But it sounds as if yours was a lot worse. I don't think I had that pain more than a week or two.

I had hernia surgery a few years ago (gave me a reason to convince the wife I had to replace the old IH444 I had - no power stering). I had extreme pain when I woke up and was begging for more and more medication. finally convinced the nurses to let me sit up and was able to work off gas in my intestines. Ah, relief. Like Bird I only mild pain for a week or 2. The surgeon used a supporting mesh for the muscles to bond too which helped my recovery.

Hi Randy,
Sorry to hear that your havin such a bad time of it ! All I can say is are you doin what the docs are tellin you ? Meaning are you tryin to do things your not supposed to be doin ? That will definitely delay your recovery !

My hernia blew out from the size of a pea to a quarter. Probably the reason the recovery is taking so long. It's hard to even sit up because of the knot I have where they cut me open. They didn't even stitch me up, they super glued me. LOL Each day I have less pain meaning I am getting better. I am a very active person from riding my quad to hitting the waves on my SeaDoo.

I sympathize with you. I had surgery a few months back... you know... um... well... the kind where you walk in as a stud and leave as a dud? Well, I felt that exact same way. Geeez, was it bad. I started wondering if the surgery went wrong, it was so bad.

The key is that you have to listen to what they tell you to do for post-op. If you're like me, there is no possible way you can lay low and sit around on the couch for a few days, let alone a few minutes or hours even. I was up and about as soon as I got home and boy-oh-boy did I ever pay for it. I'm talking bruising to the point of turning black I thought the surgery got botched and I might lose important parts.

After a week or so, everything was fine.

I have no experience with hernias but I'm an active person too and have managed to make recovery times longer by doing things I shouldn't have. I had my gallbladder out last year and 2 weeks after the surgery I was in so much pain I was sure they left a tool or clamp in me. Turns out I tore the muscles around all the incision sites. So, hard as it is, take it easy and I hope all goes well. Had I done that, at the 2 week mark I would have been mostly recovered but as it was, I was in worse pain than the day of the surgery. I had one done a few years ago. Went with a local instead of general(don't like general anestisia) and walked out of the hospital less than an hour after the procedure was completed. The local gave me enough time to get home and get comfortable on the couch. My prime post-op instructions were to stay off my feet, particularly avoiding any abdominal strain like setting up, and apply ice packs for as long and as often as I could stand them. I got off the couch by rolling off onto my knees then using the couch to stand upright. Worst pain was the following morning trying to get out of bed to get to the pain meds. Again had to roll off the bed onto my knees then stand up. The pain dropped off quickly after that bad morning. After that is was a few weeks till I was moveing around like normal.
