I have recently acquired a 1990 Cat 416 Series II backhoe.

It has the perkins diesel engine and I was trying to find where the block heater would be located (if it has one)

Thanks.

It's possible that it doesn't have one. My small backhoe's engine block heater was optional. Some of the CAT backhoes I've run didn't have one, but they had an ether start.

Very true. On the subject of the ether start...

Mine does have the ether start switch on the console. What is the correct procedure for using this? Do you flick the switch while cranking and continue cranking, or do you need to hold the switch up while still cranking?

I am going to have to hook up my truck with jumpers to the battery as there is not enough umph in the backhoe batteries to get it running in 10 degree weather with 1" ice coating the whole thing.

For the CAT equipment with either bottles you hold the switch for 3 seconds then release the switch. At the bottle there is a pin that moves up into the bottle and releases the either. I would suggest to start cranking the engine just before you release the switch.

If you have a parts book for your machine you can look in it and locate the engine block heater and that will help you locate it on your machine.Look under ELECTRICAL & STARTING. It should be in that section of the parts book or CD-ROM. I would say that it was a option on that machine and it may not have one.

Thanks all for the input. The guy who I bought this from still has to bring me the service/parts book, maintenance records, and a grading bucket.

I am going to try to fire her up tomorrow am. Figure I would let her idle for 30 or 40 min with the heater on high to help get the ice off the cab and to charge up the batteries some.

I have a JD 4200 with FEL but that just doesn't have the weight to get through all the snow and ice on the driveways.

Thanks again.
