I'm thinking about making an implement to do light smoothing of a gravel driveway. I already have a box scraper, which works great at evening out the large dips and bumps, but leaves some lines. I'm thinking some kind of blanket with a bit of weight would do it. Would a piece of chain link fence with some weight added do it? The implement could be just a tow-behind thing. I'm thinking the blanket could be up to 8 feet wide if it's not too heavy. Or would a beam, like a railroad tie, attached at both ends, do the light spreading I'm looking for?

I use an old semi truck tire for leveling out dirt and gravel after using my BB. Works great, and was free:thumbsup:.

You can also drag an old step ladder.

The chain link fence would be great. Works great with some weight on it.

Here's what I ended up doing for the light leveling I needed. I did use found materials--in my case, it was simply a piece of 5'-long I-beam scrap left over from our house construction, with a 4"x6" piece nailed to it for added weight. I added some lag screws to the ends, and hooked my chain to them, and looped the chain thru my BH bucket teeth. I was able to move material sideways a little bit by shortening the chain on one side so that the beam was angled, but the main work was done with the beam set perpendicular to travel. Very light but rigid "implement" and easy to pick up and move around myself. The wood edge did take a beating on the gravel, but when it's totally worn out I can flip the I-beam over, and I have another piece in the wings too. I'll need to use it only once or twice per year. I think this will be all the finishing tool I need after doing the heavy cutting and filling with the box scraper right after the snow melts in the spring. :)

What I use to groom my alley and drive. Plus I can load it as heavy as I want.

I'm beginning to feel guilty about buying my DR Power Grader!

You guys have done great things with left-over materials!

Unfortunately, I'm just beginning to learn how to scrounge for such things. On the other hand, the Power Grader has worked well. Did the neighbor's driveway a few days ago, which was a bit worse than mine but not too bad. Took a few more passes, but it cleaned up their gravel drive nicely. (I'm just trying to find more uses for the thing so I can justify the expense to myself!:ashamed:)

The ability to precisely raise or lower the depth of the "dig" from the seat, while moving, is great for being able to feather the grader & gravel.

But I bet my wallet's lighter than yours!:( Nice job(s)!
