black exhaust .case ih 495

my case 495 is emitting black exhaust.the timing gears seem to be misaligned the marks don't seem to be in the right places on the gears.the diagram in the manual doesn't show the marks am I on the right track is is there some common problem I don't see?

The marks could be off, but what would cause them to be off is the greater mystery.
