I'm going to look at a used BL4690a BH with aprox. 400hrs for $3800. Does this sound like an OK deal? Anything in particular I should look for? I will use it with a 4330

400 hours can be a lot if the BH was not maintained.

Check all the cylinders for leaks.
Check all the hoses for wear. especially where they can rub on the frame.
Check all the pins. If they have not been greased regularly they will have wear.
Check the bucket and it's pins.
Their are different mounting kits to fit a B and L series tractors. If the BH was used on a B series tractor there may be some added parts needed to make it fit.

Prices on used BH can vary a lot. If it's in good shape then $3800 sure beats the $5 to 6000 for a new one.

I will take a close lood at pins, bushing and hoses. I did not know of the different mounting brackets. I plan to purchase a 4330 with an 853 loader. I believe the backhoe came off of a 4630. Thanks

Along with what Ron advised...

Are you getting this from the dealer where you are buying the tractor, of from a third party?

You want to be sure that when you put it on your tractor is is put on right. My manual states that "Grand L tractors require the use of braces under the top sides of the heavy dutytop link bracket." So you probably need more than just the heavy duty top link bracket to do it right. If the dealer is installing it that is one thing. If you are trying to figure it out you may miss something that is important when you apply the backhoe to a different tractor than it was on to begin with.

Another thing to check is that the hitch limiter safety bar is still in place, and that the special hardend pins that are used to attach the backhoe to the top link bracket are still there [not sure how to tell if they are the original ones though].

You also want to get the right ROPS for your tractor. A folding rops is sometimes specified to give greater head clearance.

Hope this adds something... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sounds like a lot to me with all those hours. I just bought the same backhoe on ebay for $3075.00. The unit I bought only had 100 hrs. of service and looked pretty darn good.

There was another one sold on ebay last week that looked almost brand new, I think it sold for just under 4K... but I might be wrong about that.

My "new" old 4690:

Thought these were pretty good deals too:
