What the He**???

Because of gear grinding that tells me it's not independent. No oil clutch system involved.

So the only way we can get it engaged is shutting off the engine??

What the He**??

I agree, if you shut off the engine and engage the PTO lever, then restart the engine your PTO will turn unstopped as long as the engine is turning. This ain't right.

Let me think about this overnight. We gotta apply the K.I.S.S. principle here, Keep It Simple Stupid. :)

Got me puzzled. I fix everything from CAT excavators to CNC electronics but I can't do a thing here because I don't know what kind of guts are in there.

I read something about the 25 indicating it should stop turning when the clutch is pushed. that also would stop whatever shaft from spinning.

Getting close to just popping the cap on the rear drive to see what is going on. I can get at the 3pt valve and see the PTO drive.

I feel your pain.

If you've read something that indicates the PTO should stop turning when the clutch is disengaged that would indicate it is a non-live type PTO. This would also confirm why it grinds when trying to engage it.

I'd be just like you. After awhile you just wanna see something that makes sense. That means opening up the guts of this beast and taking a look. :)

Again, I feel your pain.

Is the clutch for the machine adjusted properly ? Can you access the main clutch through inspection doors on the side of the bell housing on the engine ?

A lot of tractors have two arrangements for the clutches - main clutch and the PTO clutch. If either are out of adjustment that grinding will happen.

Do you have a manual for the tractor ? If not you need one if you can find out who sells them.

Only thing I found so far is a half *** manual from a dealer for 50 bucks. I thought that was a little stiff for something that gives a vague over view, with curled edges but "the pages are all there".

Hey
I had a similar problem with my new chinese tractor. the PTO always grinded when I tried engaging, but with motor off all went in ok.
My problem ended up being that I was not pushing the clutch pedal in all the way, even though it felt like it as it was as hard down as I could go. A little more pressure with the foot on the clutch and it went a little further, you could feel it. Then the PTO lever went in smoothly.
It was just me not knowing that I had to push the pedal down harder. Nothing in the manual told me this. It is my first tractor, so what everyone else probably knew I didnt.

Brad's tractor apparently has a "two stage" clutch assembly. That's what the older small Fords used. Initial pedal movement disengages the main clutch and stops tractor movement. Pushing the pedal beyond that "hard spot" results in stopping the PTO. This is what is normally called live PTO because the tractor transmission gears and direction of the tractor can be changed without stopping the PTO.

It's possible the Bob's tractor clutch is so far out of adjustment that it is impossible to disengage the PTO portion??

If I had to lay money down on a bet, ^ this is what I would bet on.

YEP! Took the little clutch stop screw all the way out so the pedal would go down further and works like a champ!

Now I just need to figure out the 3pt issue.

There is still something amiss with the clutch. You shouldn't have had to remove that stop screw. If you can't correct the situation with the normal pedal adjustment then something's going on inside the clutch housing. If so, it's probably a worn out clutch disc. I'd run it like it is if possible.

As for the 3pt issue. Since both of my tractors acted very strange if I reversed the function of the levers, are you sure you are using the correct lever as the draft control lever?
