As if we don't already know /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif - but we have to be reminded.

DRIVE THE SPEED LIMIT.

According to the U.S. Dept. of Energy, because of wind resistance, for every mile per hour over 55 that you drive, your fuel economy goes down by 2%. A vehicle that averages 30 mpg at 55 mph, will only get about 27 mpg at 60 mpg, and only 21 mpg at 70 mph. While they don't mention it, it also saves lives. Just a Thought.

Operating a vehicle that does NOT weigh 5,000 pounds is a simple solution too, less mass = less energy to get and keep moving.

Both our VW Turbocharged direct injection diesels (Jetta and New Beetle) get 45+mpg and have for the last eight years! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

They'll even do 135 miles per hour if you aren't worried about wind resistance! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I did this real quick at work

Diesel here is $3.09
Gas. $2.60

MPG on my old Powerchoke 17 mpg (all the time)
MPG on my car 25 to 30 mpg
Miles per month: 2,000

Cost per month for diesel: $365.52
Cost per month for Gas: $208 to $173.3
Savings for me to use gas: $155.53 to $190.19 per month

Savings per year (when compared to diesel) at todays rates:
$1866.353 to $2282.353

Savings for 4-years at todays rates: $7,465 to $9,129.....You could not give me a diesel.

I agree a VW diesel might be good but I would never own a VW or a Ford (again). Nevermind the VW diesels can't be sold here.

Even if you compared your VW diesel to my car (gas).

It would cost me between $36 to $70 MORE to own a gas. Now worth it.

1-year: would be $848 to $432 MORE to own a gas (my car)..not worth it.

4-years would be $1738 to $3,392..Not a lost of savings here since there are not that high on JDP.

Not sure of the rational here, but your comparing a 6000lb truck to a 3000lb car. They are intended for totally different things. Try the numbers of your gas burner compared to skypups diesel, ,then let us know if its economical.....

Not sure how the wont buy a Ford again and cant buy a VW here are validated either, but you are surelyentitled to your opinion.

It's no big secret, if everyone's vehicle got an average of 40mpg instead of 20 mpg, the national consumption of fuel would be cut in half, to 1/2 of what it is now. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes sir, I agree... Bring on the diesel......

Don't drive, that will save the most. BTW, many highways now have speed limits of 65 or 70 mph -- so just driving at the speed limit won't save that much gas.

Hmm, I did that since everyone always says diesel is better. Well they are not always right since I owned one.

Again, I compared my current car (ES300) vs his VW diesel (posted above and again below)…again not worth the time, larger repair bills, more up-front cost etc, lack or qaulity, JDP ratings etc.

Even if you compared your VW diesel to my car (gas).

It would cost me between $36 to $70 MORE to own a gas. Not worth it.

1-year: would be $848 to $432 MORE to own a gas (my car)..Not worth it.

4-years would be $1738 to $3,392..Not a lost of savings here since there are not that high on JDP.

I said I would not buy a Ford or a VW since I work with people that have VW (TDI) to and they are paying the shops lease for god sake! Nevermind the Fords….

Ford, I always owned fords and the steped-up a level in quality…I go up, not down.

Again diesel is and has been between 25 to 50 cents more per gallon (he he he)...Now bring that on and the thousand of posts on people complaining and whining about it.

I have NOT spent one red cent in repairs for either of our TDIs in the last eight years (16 years combined) except for tires, battery, oil, and fuel and have never gotten less than 40 mpg

That is great..even a blind squirrel gets lucky at times! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just going by the numbers here and like to go up on ratings and not down.

Again, based on JDP (dependability study), Lexis is #1 as usual (for 11 years) and VW is 35. Repair per 100 for Lexus is 189 and VW is 335.

Based on JDP (Customer Service Index) Lexus is #4, VW is 34.
Based on JDP (Initial Quality Study) Lexus is #1, VW is 34 again

Throw in all the diesel normal issues, thanks but no thanks.
