I hate snakes period. Luckily we have serveral kinds and running into one is not uncommon. With that said, if it's a king snake or a rat snake we can both go our separate ways, but a rattle snake is dead.

I could care less if it's legal or not, it dead. To many close calls over years has me gun shy.

Be standing knee deep in peanuts in the top of a trailer and have a timber ratter dump dang near in your lap and see how concern you are about it being a endanger species. Note, after his trip through the picker, he is not a happy camper.

I saw this Copperhead while walking at lunch today! I work in the only place in Massachusetts that has both Timber rattlesnakes and Copperheads. I've been hoping to see one since I started working there.

Only thing I Kill is mice. Not a pacifist, just think everything has a purpose. Snakes ain't out to get you!

'Cept that one on Samuels plane!

Not so. If you come upon then and catch them by surprise, like on the Copperhead, getting a stick of firewood and one is nestled under it, they will strike first and ask questions later. Snake bites from venomous snakes are real nasty on humans. Permanent deformation and loss of use in some instances. Rarely a death.

Take Water Mocassins for example. You can be trimming around your pond bank on your lawn mower and when you get within a few feet they will skedaddle. However, if you are walking that same tall grass like you would be when fishing or running a weed eater, you can easily step on one and it will have you before you know it.

We have grass snakes and chicken snakes here that are harmless and go their way without being molested.

Granted make some noise and announce your presence is not the problem. It's when you aren't thinking about snakes and accidentally happen onto one on their turf is wherein the problem lies!

I didn't know rattlers were that far North.

I think this is a case of what is common in the area! We have Eastern Timber Rattlesnakes--but I bet the total number in Massachusetts is 20, probably 1/2 that number of Copperheads.
I have hoped my entire life to be able to see a rattlesnake or Copperhead, I actively go looking for them.

For me to see that snake is a BIG deal.
As you can tell by my name I'm a birdwatcher, we had Sandhill Cranes nest in Massachusetts for the first time last year-right in my town! That news made the paper! It was a HUGE deal!
You Mid-westerners are saying; " are you kidding? If they want to see Sandhill Cranes, come to my place, we have them by the 1000's"
But if you guys from Kansas saw a Humback whale you'd be as excited as I am about that snake!

Just trying to put it all in perspective!

Cheers,
BN

You have more than what you think in MA. The blue hills in Canton and the Berkshires are loaded with timbers and copperheads, I spent a lot of time in both places, now the morons want to plant them on an island in the quabin res, snakes can swim, bunch of idiots.

If I wasn't so dumb,I'd post a link to the tv news about it,but here's the story. Hugh Sparks of Plano Tx was bitten by a rattlesnake near Haskell Tx in June. The back story is that the air ambulance charged $43,514 to fly him to Abilene. At one point DRs thought he would lose his hand. The snake was rather small and had no rattles so Sparks thought it harmless and was bite while moving it off the road. There should be several lessons here for those on both sides of fence.

Atsah,

I work in the Blue Hills! On the Braintree side, we have had Rattlers on the property many times! I just haven't seen one yet!

I watched that Copperhead for many minutes, I was mesmerized! What a beautiful creature! It wasn't until I read about them that I realized that they can strike at quite a distance! I was no more than 3 feet from a 3 foot snake! I'm glad I'm not a mouse!

Cheers,
BN

I ran a copperhead over with my ATV in Savoy forest on rt2, he jumped off the ground up onto my front rack, that was close.

We have no venomous snakes in ME but we do have a very aggressive snake called a Northern Water Snake. They will bite you if you get within three feet of them, they are always in my wood pile, they get long and thick and look like a rattlesnake. They are in MA as well, I kill them immediately.
