Beware John Deere 4*20 series owners--antifreeze leak

I bought a used 4120 and it had the leak there have been several service bulletins on this issue mine was fixed twice under with John Deere picking up the tab...first with a more flexible sealant because of the aluminum and cast iron temperature coefficient second time adding a gasket...the same engine is used in stationary pumps for irrigation and generator sets and in those cases as well as skids steers they use the gasket...not sure why the didn't gasket all of them....

I have a 2006 4120 and now at 2500 hours, have the same coolant leak. I just noticed it on the concrete barn floor yesterday. The tractor is always parked in the pole barn as well. Very disappointed to hear about the high cost of a defective item after warranty! I'm thinking that adding coolant as needed is much cheaper than a $2000 repair bill. I'm also thinking about trading it in for a notch smaller unit anyway.

Tank you! I solve the problem,i reseal the timing cover and it's ok now.I have one question about the runing temperature of this engine. It's work about 100 degrees celsius(212F) apox.In some manuals i saw the thermostat is full open at 100 degrees.I am afraid to work with those temperature.

A relatively new product is out now, that works very well for this repair, at a cost of less than $ 20. I poured a bottle of K-Seal into the radiator of my 2005 4120, that started leaking from the timing cover joint at about 1200 engine hours, and it cured the problem.

I have changed the coolant, per the recommended schedule, a couple times in the last 20 years also. I didn’t think $ 20 was a bad cost for the fix.

My other two tractors are both out of service now, with electrical issues, so the 4120 will be pulling triple duty this season. It worked great on the K-seal fix last season, so hopefully it keeps up the good work.

To use K-seal, the bottle needs to be shaken first, then poured into the radiator. Then the tractor should be operated for several hours, or at least until it reaches operating temperature. The K seal contains a hardening agent, that will flow into the leak, and make a permanent seal. There is no need to remove any parts or install a gasket. That is a big waste of time and money. That can all be done with chemicals these days.
