A few weeks back we were lamenting Home Depot in this forum. I think I found a good alternative in middle Tennessee /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif (See Atachment)

I love it. I'd buy from them just cuz they have a sense of humor!

You know that you can ask a question at that place and they really love to talk about what ever it up.

I went to Home Depot and asked a few questions and got some answers but then the guy did not know how it was to be used. Its kind of scary how they have people that really have never done the work or seen it done.

Hmmm, Home Depot not impressed at all, pitiful, sorry, useless = all terms I can think of when asked about home depot....
Where I live there are three Home Depot stores with in driving distance , The newest and closest one just opened this spring didn't have what I was looking for (pre-emergent) Ok ask about it "Ahh we don't carry that anymore" drove to second store "Ahh haven't gotten shipment yet" (this was April) forget it... Go to Lesco store and get it just a little more $....

Next project needed lumber, none available on the rack but I saw some up higher still bundled, Sooo I get a clerk who gets the yoot (youth) who is responsible for this isle and I greet him with a "how ya doin" I get in response "Waasup" /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I tell him waasup I want some stinkin' lumber and you need to get it down to the shelf .... He comes back with the fork lift and another yoot ,sooo now there are to yoot's and a GRUMP (me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) First yoot makes no less than 15 attempts at lining up to the hack to pick it up ,meanwhile his partner is standing there doin the moonwalk or sumthin?? Trying to guide him /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I'm at the end of the isle hidding around the corner trying not to look because my neck hurts from shaking my head.... The guy finally gets under the hack and starts to lift WHOOAA!! YOUR UNDER THE RACK SUPPORT /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif... Man somebody's gonna get hurt here!!

They finally get the lopsided pile down to the lower bin cut the bands and leave... "THATS OK FELLAS I'LL LOAD IT MYSELF" as they go to take a break /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif UNBELIEVEABLE!!!

I soon found out this store has had THREE managers in the six months it has been open.....

OK I feel better now /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I was in a California orange store when the cousins or relatives of those same yoots were trying to get a pallet of gallon cans of paint down from the top shelf with a fork lift. Guess what?..........It took several days to get the mess cleaned up. If you are in the orange store and you hear the sound of a fork lift, head for the nearest exit or Lowe's if you value your life. (you may even want to think twice about Lowe's because once in a while one of the relatives get lost and show up there as well)

And it's all 30 percent less than at your local package store or gun shop!!!
Never mind that the booze is only 20 proof and half the guns are missing firing pins or sights or stocks.....

NO, NO, NO,
If you start stocking those items in the same place as nail guns...we'll have a 5 day waiting period for a nail gun. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Not to mention, we'll have to fill out a 4473 form for any nail "gun" we purchase. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
And, we'll have to show our driver's license to get collated nails, and all the nail magazines will be limited to 10 rounds. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

No, I vote to keep guns out of HD.
OK,
What about Whiskey...

OK,
What about Whiskey...

Always get a kick outta watching the things peple do in the parking lot of the box stores. Also wonder how much whiskey they had consumed before ever reaching the store...
Saw fella yesterday buy a $19 sheet of foam and tie it to his taneau cover with a single piece of twine across the bed....That lasted a quarter of a mile /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Do-it-yourself lumber yards are the next best thing to the comedy channel. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My favorite was while waiting to be loaded (at the BIG orange box) one day, an elderly man and woman were getting a stack of shingles in the back of their pick-up. The woman mentioned that they needed some help unloading them into their garage when they got home. (That of course, fell upon deaf ears, as it was a bit of a miracle that they were even getting them LOADED in the first place) She said if they couldn't get some help, the shingles would need to sit in the truck bed until their roofer showed up on monday. Then the $64,000 question..... "Will it hurt these shingles to let them sit outside"?

First time in my life I saw 12 grown men ALL bite their lips at the same time. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Now, I know it is a sin to find comfort in the misfortunes of others, BUT, the most fun can be had by packing a lunch, a couple of lawn chairs and a camera and setting up camp at the local public boat launch ramp. It's even better in the evening when they return to haul, loaded with more than a sunburn. Man O Man.
Don't do this if you can't run fast or during bird season.

All the best,
Martin

LOL! I've seen this phenomenon you're talking about, first hand. Quite hilarious!

And I won't even go into how I launched my boat WITHOUT the drain plug installed /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Best one I saw was this guy who thought he had the launch thing down pat. He put his wife in the boat, released the winch, and shot the trailer into the water. The boat lifted off the trailer, and he floored it up the ramp. WITH THE WINCH LINE STILL HOOKED TO THE BOAT.

After he dragged the boat up the concrete ramp about 50 feet, they decided to skip the fishing excursion for the day.

And we won't even go into some peoples "trailer backing skill level". /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The sad and SCARY part is that what other choice do you have besides the big box stores now a days. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I remember growing up, and my dad going to the local hardware store, and what they didn't carry which wasn't much being it was not very big, they ordered. Now HD has put most of the little mom and pop shops out of business. I guess they can import all the Chinese made junk much cheaper then real stuff made in the USA. And talking about junk....it seems everything I buy from HD is junk and doesn't last for more then 1 yr..example, I purchased a hose real...took it home, rolled it out of the garage, rolled up the hose. The next day, I was unrolling it and the handle broke right off...yes, the accepted the return, but I am really tired of everything being made so cheap, and breaking. When will we realize as a nation that if we keep losing our American job to china then we will have no quality items left...let alone any jobs left.....Sorry for rambling but I need to go to HD today to get some screws...I am really dreading it... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I agree 100%. However, that same junk is being sold everywhere, not just at the big box stores. One reason we kicked butt during WWII (admittedly way before my time) is because we could build it faster than they could destroy it; now we've sent our manufacturing base overseas, often building factories in countries who could very well be throwing
ordnance at us in the future... I won't mention China by name.

Actually I do admit to shopping at HD (some people there are just nicer than some at Lowe's) and Lowe's since they are about the only places for lumber and some other items.

But in Central VA (Richmond) we have Pleasant's Hardware, THE best hardware store on this planet. Very big and with several locations around here. Not the cheapest but they deliver (sometimes on short notice) and in general are the most helpful knowledgeable you can find.

Their motto is "Most anything". And they do have most anything. Locally owned by the Sauer family (C F Sauer--spices, Duke's Mayo, etc, also good stuff). I've had an account there for over 25 years.

Once years ago I was buying some nuts and bolts for a project and mentioned it to a clerk who was helping me. He gave me his home # for any questions I might have over the weekend while he was off. Guy at Siewers Lumber, another local gem, did the same thing.

I'm sure other areas have these type stores. Maybe someone could start a new thread to tell good stories.

Jim
not sure why the type turned red, all I did was fix some spelling?? Maybe I embarrassed Muhammed?
