I like link chain w/heavy duty springs...inside and outside of wheel.

I don't use any tighteners or straps of any kind.

I let the air out of the tire. Install the chains. Air up the tire.

Bungee cords work for me.

Patience is your friend on larger tires. Put the chains on as tight as you can latch them and then run it for a few minutes. Then see if you can get them a link tighter.

I just see no need for tighteners. If I can run these chains without tighteners, tractor chains should be no problem. :)

Not going to single anyone out. But look at some of the pics using tighteners. The chains could easily be latched a link tighter and not need the tightener.

P.S. I've never lost a tire chain due to looseness. :)

That is hands down the best way to do it. Skidder chains work the same way when we did it. BUT with loaded tires it is a PITB. So I use both the spring style and HD rubber straps. This set up works good for going on the road, No chain slap this way. CJ

I'm with ovrzd on this. We never used chain tensioners on skidders nor do I use them on my filled tractor tires. I do not "air down". It is a matter of the correct length chain for your tires along with tightening to all the necessary links provided. Have I ever lost a chain? Oh yeah, but not for looseness. In 52 years of working in the woods along with 38 years pushing snow in that time frame, I can count that happening on one hand. There can always be some stupid stick or ground obstruction that worked the chain just right to unseat it but that chance is as good as winning the lottery.

What one must be careful with when ordering tire chain, is to see how many tires listed works for the chain you bought. I have added and subtracted links and cross chain to get the fit I need buying the supposed chain size that fits my tires.

I have to agree with arrow and ovrzd. Having the correct chain size tightened properly is all that seems to be required. I use TRYGG studded chains (from Norway) and, when properly installed, they simple do not come off. Good luck!
