What is the best way to clear this tree?
I don't need to save any because it's just in the way.
Easiest way preferably without working from the top down.
It's on what was a well used trail. I am hoping to extend the trail around our perimeter.

I would make a partial cut from the top about 1/4 of the diameter, as close to the stump as I could. Then come up from the bottom to finish it. You also need to watch the tree stress to make sure it doesn't pinch the saw.

I would simply cut it off at the stump being careful since the stump is likely to tip back towards hole. The 2 possible pinch situations are if cut from the top it might close if the stress is downwards on tree. Or if cutting from bottom it could close if the stump is pulling the tree upwards. You will find out if you watch during cutting. Wedges can be a help if you know how to work with them.

Thanks.
I was thinking some relief cuts. Pinching was my hesitation.
It's laying across a wash area but I have good access at the root area. Not so much at the top

I have an app "screenshot quick".
You turn it on and a button appears. Choose picture, push button, turn screenshot off.
Now picture is in my gallery. I can resize picture, then push pencil logo. Choose color/size, etc. and draw. Then hit save.

@Happy in NC Yikes! It looks as if you some more farther up the draw? Wind storm?

What kind of tree is it?

+1 on judicious cutting with wedges, and be prepared for stump and butt to pop as the tension is relieved by cutting, but I am not an expert by any means.

@Jstpssng are these ever cut vertically, and then winched apart to keep people at a distance? I've only cut trees like this from the top, thinking that while it was more cuts, each cut had less stored energy, and therefore less likely to move as suddenly or as far. (And therefore safer? Personally, I don't trust my reflexes or agility, especially in rugged terrain as I have seen how fast wood can kick.)

All the best,

Peter

It's hard to tell without being there to see the full picture to be honest but I would do like Jstpssng said... I do a cut top down 1/4 to 1/3 of the tree and then you can tell from that cut where the tension as you cut from the bottom up, if it close you are good, if it open stop cutting from the bottom and go back to the top. But essentially the stump wants to get up and the tree wants to get down.
