Guys, I'm looking for suggestions for painting pipe. I've made some corner posts and gate posts out of misc. steel pipe and need some paint prep suggestions. Besides the usual wire brushing the rust scale off what do you guys do the make this paint stick and stay around a while. I'm thinking of using some oil base exterior primer and paint and probably going with a burnt orange color. Nothing fancy just common ag stuff. Need some input. Thanks.

Hard to beat a good 2 part epoxy on utility metal...especially outdoors.

They also make a product that will etch the metal, its something you would put on before the primer. It can make the paint stick better.

Don't forget to "wash" off any oily residue. I like to use naptha because it's an excellent solvent and dries fast.

Don't know how rusty that steel pipe was, but if it was really rusted I'd use Gempler's rust converter as the primer and then paint over it. Avoids the wire brushing step.

Use a product called OSPHO which is a phosfuric (sp) acid solution that chemically converts rust to another compound. There are other products that do the same thing. This will help get rid of the surface rusting / scaling and can be painted over.

After that any good oil based paint will do. Spray or roll on for quick application.

You can also use Dairy line cleaner which contains Phosphoric acid for the original coating. It may be cheaper than some other products??

Do a Google on rust prevention. Lots of information.

When I purchased an older F350 from he company I work for it had a 10' flat bed with steel racks & a 1 ton lift gate. The racks & gate were pretty rusty. I took it to a body shop I've used before & they used a 'rust converter' product on it. The **** thing looked like new when I got it back (but my wife made me get rid of it anyway :( )

follow primer rust removals above then, also when going about it get a good washing put (car wash mitt) one with good fibers lambs wool looking. and some long rubber gloves. put on rubber gloves, stick em in the mits and dip into the paint bucket & go to town fastest way to paint round fence pipes!!!
