I have a 2 acre clearing that I would like to get a very accurate elevation profile of so I can model it in 3D. I will be using the free Google Sketchup program. I want to virtually build my house, shop, and driveway before I actually build it.
I want to do this myself to save money. I have done this on small scales by simply using very long hoses and making "water levels" and recording everything on a piece of paper. This was on areas big enough to build a shop on.
I have GPS on my iphone but I'm not sure if I could trust it to be accurate enough. I was thinking about taking elevation readings in a 20'x20' grid then entering them in the computer.
A laser level on a tripod would be great but I don't know anyone with one of those. Maybe I could do some searching and borrow or rent one.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
