OK. After reading Builder's post about full-size vs. compact I think I need to get a full size hoe. In fact, a CASE just like builder has would be great. Cab, air, 4wd. I want to use it for general residential construction.
What is the best way to find a used unit. Online, call a dealer, auction?
Got any web links?

Here's where I started:

Construction Equipment at Machinery Trader: Caterpillar, Komatsu, Case, John Deere, Volvo

However, I ended up buying a lightly used unit from a local CASE dealer. He's a big dealer, so he was able to easily locate me a used CASE out of his fleet with all my requirements and honestly, I think I got a great price, too. He even gave me NEW machine financing 4.5% for 5 years!

You might find traveling to my dealer (Yes, even from VA) will be VERY beneficial to you since he has a branch in Delaware (NO SALES TAX). That alone saved me thousands on my purchase. PM me if you want a contact. He will definately throw me a favor if I give him your name as a potential customer!!

Yeah that website Builder gave ya is a great site to find machinery. I wouldn't go to an auction unless you knew for sure the machine's history you were looking at. Don't trust anyone's word. Look at that website and definitely stop by your CASE dealer, they'll have new and used right down to a 580C.

Finding used TLBs is difficult as they are specialty machines. I have been in the market for a second L48 and all I have found in 1 year is a beat rental for sale........not what I wanted. L48s do not seem to be on the market much, did see one in the Heavy equipment Want AD but it was 2 states away, now I wish I bought it. I am always on the lookout, but not much out there.

Yeah, if you only want one model made by one company, like an L48. If you're searching for a full size TLB, there's about 8 brands to chose from and lots of models made by each brand.

I found dozens to chose from and found the whole buying experience pretty easy & fun.

Well, my neighbor has a nice 580K for sale. I think they are asking $25k. From what I was told it use to belong to a doctor friend of mine but I have not verified it with him yet. If it did it was very well taken care of.

Maybe someday I will buy a 580 as you are right and they are a dime a dozen where as specialized machines are hard to come buy. I am starting to like Case 580s better than the CATs. Very versatile, but too big for me right now. try looking for a used L48....very far and few in between.

I know you and I have had some disagreements about things, but I gaurantee you if you came down to my place and ran my 580 for a few hours, you'd be shocked at how close it comes to a L-48 in manueverability and overall ergonomics to a small TLB. It handles amazingly well in tight spaces.

CASE designed the 580 to be COMPACT. It's about 5/6ths the size of comparable HP full size units with the backhoe dipperstick being shorter & centered over the cab. The cab is shorter than most models and the tires are a little smaller. It's definately not the hulking beast you might think. I wouldn't be surprised if the 580 is the biggest selling backhoe in the world and probably has sold 2 to 3 times more than the next most popular model, my guess would be a JD310.

I really think I want a cab and AC. How well does the AC work in your 580, Builder?
