I am preparing to buy a tooth bar for my JD 4710 based on all the positive feed back posted here. I find that the following seem to be the most popular: markham, H&H and carver. I would like to hear if anyone can provide info on which is better or the pros and cons of each. Thanks!

Mrjasonl, Don't over think it. Toothbar is like a pick axe, most anyone will do the job. the important part is having one, not which one. All the ones you have mentioned have been well received here at TBN. I say go with the cheapest.

Ah... to a point. My brother in law has one, looks like a good weld job for the shanks but all the teeth are on upside down. First time I saw it, I stared for a while, then I laughed. Yet even that one still digs like a gopher and that is all they are supposed to do anyway.

Stop waiting, get one and get it on and wonder why you didn't do it earlier.

Jason,

Welcome to TBN! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have one from FCL I bought from Mark Brucker at KC Canary John Deere. I really like mine and Mark was great to deal with. I called him toll free at 800-920-7097 and the bar was shipped direct from the manufacturer to my door. It's very heavy and has been the best money I've spent on any tractor related purchase.

Give Mark a call and make sure you mention it's an 'internet sale' and you can avoid the state sales tax there, too.

Poppa was right about the 'overthinking' part. Once you get it you'll wonder why and how you ever did without it.

Good luck wiith whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yep, don't wait, go for it.

Best investment I have made, except maybe adding fluid to the rear tires, cause once you add the tooth bar, its easy to fill the loader bucket. Pops trees out of the ground, roots and all.

I bought mine at Outback Tractor, Cumming, GA.

Enjoy,

Les

We have had Toothbars made by both Markham Welding and W.R.Long (I believe Carvers Toothbar is made by them). Both are good and will do the job. The differences between the two. Markham has wider beefier teeth than the WR. The Markham does not have the slots in the mounting plate the WR does. This is not really an issue unless you want to leave the bar on and fold it back into the bucket. If you are content with completely removing it when not in use, it is no different than the Markham. Other than those 2 things there are no other differences. We have sold both and had no complaints on either one.

We sell tooth bars built by WR Long, which i think is what carve sells also, they are real nice units, have not had any complaints. The will build them to you dimensions so the fit is nice. Have several TBN'ers with them i'm shure if you search for wr long you could find there post about them.

I second Poppa and Gary: The three most valuable "low ticket" attachments that I have gotten are the toothbar, bucket hooks and bucket mounted pallet forks. Each one increases the utility of the FEL greatly and with all three together, the FEL is one versatile tool!

Love my H&H. Henro was right. It is built tough, and I like the"V" edge that protects the existing cutting edge. I unfortunately installed mine incorrectly, though. When I set the bucket down, I evidently did not have it flat. So, the bucket's cutting edge splits the "V" cutting edge of the toothbar. The bucket's edge is supposed to be on the bottom edge of the toothbar's "V" edge for more strength. I now have to wait until I get my welder, weld reinforcing plates on the bucket, and install the toothbar correctly. Oh, STUPID me. Doesn't pay to hurry. It certainly seems to give the bucket "rigidity" along the cutting edge, which was my goal (as I bent the buckets cutting edge prior).
