Best Synthetic oil for 5240

Any recommendations on Synthetic motor oil for my 100 hr oil change on my 5240??

I recommend using Rotella T 15W40 for two reasons. First, it is relative inexpensive and readily available. Secondly, it it a CI rated oil and not a CJ
rated oil. The CJ oils have less zinc and phosphate which protect against metal to metal wear. Just make sure the oil is rated CI and not CJ.

Well, you get what you pay for . Rotella T can't compair to AMSOIL. AMSOIL 15W -40 CI -4 heavy duty diesel oil has 12 TBN to control acids .

I use Shell 5Wx40 in the F350 and in the JD4700. The Shell has a good price/performance.

The F350 oil analysis just came back from the lab. Supposed to change at 5,000 miles but changed at 8,400ish. TBN was 10.9. I think Shell starts at 12ish. Never seen it go lower than 10.x in my UOA. The oil and air filters are working fine with no evidence of a problem. The only issue was a bit of fuel in the oil but that was within standards and almost certainly due to some heavy traffic I was driving for a couple of months. Had this pop up before but as soon as I was able to avoid the traffic jams the fuel was not in the oil.

Anyway, it looks like I threw out perfectly good oil.

JD sells branded Fleetguard filters for my truck. The JD prices is what the other brands cost maybe a bit less. Due to the price and the ease of getting the JD filters I get them from my JD dealer. I'm pretty sure I'll be putting in the JD coolant in the truck as well. Its the same stuff that is in their now just a different color.

Hopefully I'll catch up on my chores and get the oil changed in the JD soon. I'll send it off to the lab and see how the oil and engine are doing.

Shell 5Wx40 is going back into the engine.

Not sure what you mean by that, it comes in 6 gal drums. It has a TBN of 15 plus.

I have several gallons of Rotella-T synthetic 5W-40 waiting to go into my JD. Use the same stuff in my wife's truck (Ram 2500 with Cummins) and used it in my Jeep CRD when I had it. The oil works well, is readily available (like at Walmart) and price is acceptable (I think around $19/gallon). Not saying it's the absolute best in the world, but for my uses it is more than good enough. If you feel like spending more money or are doing something extreme, TRC and Amsoil are both worth a look - they're probably better, but for my uses it seems irrelevant. Too many tractors that have been doing hard farming for multiple decades running on cheapo oil and still working just fine, like my BIL's Ford 8N that sat in a barn for 20 years unused and is now working great with no smoke or apparent problems.

Change it often enough and you dont need to worry about " the acids"!
