I have some new fence posts that will need to be painted. They are oilfield pipe and have a light rust on them. What is the best way to stop the rust and paint them? There are only 9 posts, and they are on the cornere of a building (not miles of fence...) They will be painted red...

Simple Mike, eliminate moisture! If thats asking to much I like using Damp Proof Red Oxide primer. Rust Oleum makes it. It was exceptionally good in the old days but I think they had to take the asbestos, arsenic, dioxin, lead, selenium, radon and other such stuff out /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. Rat, thats Mr Rat to you!

Yep the Rusatoleum rusty metal primer is good stuff. A couple coats to be sure then a good oil based topcoat, best I have found available for retail sale yet. It is tender for a while but will harden up nicely in a month or so. I have used it on the underside ow mower decks with good results. Did the underside of my Gravely deck a couple years ago and it is still there, not even beat off, and I use the gravely as a small brush hog.
