Homemade would be either Black Cherry or banana. Store bought would be Bryers, particularly coffee. Cold Stone Creamery is excellent, although quite expensive. It's been mentioned here already, but I have got to find the true Italian gelato somewhere as I've heard from others it is one of the best you'll ever eat. Another good homemade flavor I about forgot is Cheerwine (N.C. popular soda) - basically vanilla with Cheerwine soda in it.

Best local ice cream is Gifford's made by a family owned and operated business in Skowhegan, Maine.

Used to have home made ice cream at the in-laws that began with a trip down the road to an Amish farm for fresh cream. My MIL cooked that into some sort of custard before it went into the hand-cranked freezer. My FIL loved ice cream, and yes, he had a spade :D

Dave, when I was a kid and we made ice cream in the old hand cranked freezer, my mother cooked the custard first, then when it was put into the freezer, more milk was stirred in before the lid went on. And we didn't have to go after the fresh cream because we had our own Jersey milk cow. But I don't remember the recipe mother used and I haven't seen a recipe in years for cooking the ingredients to make ice cream.

When we were kids we went to a local diary farm (maybe a 100 head) to buy our milk. The diary farm had a "cold room" were the milk was stored and it also had tubs of freshly made ice cream. Sometimes, if we could afford it, we would get a scoop of ice cream on a cone. The smell of this room was heaven to us kids. I went in to a Cold Stone Creamery a few years ago and that same smell was there. I think I picked up about 1000 calories just by sniffing.

Black Cherry is my favorite. Hard to find in Texas. Maybe it's because all the Winter Texans buy it up before I get to the store.

Thanks for posting the recipe. That does sound like what I remember my mother making.

About four years ago my auto club (Pace Miata) and I were touring in New Hampshire for a week. On one of our rides I picked up the mike and announced 'Hey, we just past the Ben and Jerry factory!'. All plans were dropped and we U-turned into it.
We had a factory tour and gorged ourselves. At the end of the day Jerry - yes that one - came to sit with us. Now that was fun.

No longer in existence, but I vote for High's Dairy Stores.
I saw a Highs a few months ago and immediately whipped into the lot and went in looking for ice cream. No such luck. When I inquired they said they were 711 and were just getting around to changing the sign. Told em they were a blight on the name.
