Just a couple hours ago at my homeplace it's pretty isolated and grandparents home is vacant. Mom's caregiver's husband drives up long driveway and a guy runs across the drive.
Apparently he had broken into grandparents home since a window was open. They call police and one suggested I get two hunter cameras. I have them here but such a hassle keeping up with batteries.
I was thinking solar power/rechargeable battery would be best and "bang for thec buck". Good resolution for identification but the other problem is I've seen 30 deer there at times.
Any ideas...thanks!

I have a solar powered cellular camera on my construction site. The range for identifying a car/human/large animal is only about 30ft at most. Other than that it works ok. The panel keeps the battery charged pretty well.

Why hunter cameras vs. cameras/systems specifically designed for application?

Lorex makes cloud based and local only storage recorders / cameras, wired and wireless, etc... with great reviews. Now owned by a chinese company if this bothers you but no need to attach to www.

Last couple of months I installed 2 4 camera systems, 2 terabyte recorder stores locally about 28 days continous recording and with continuous monitoring, indexes and creates ability to smart searches like only vehicles/only faces/etc..,, text alerts, etc...

for about U$350 I got 4 cameras and 2t recorder (28 days of continuous recording) no subscription fees sends alerts to App on cell phone, recorder allows for 8-Channels (up to a total of 8 wired cameras and 8 Wi-Fi cameras if you don't want to hard wire and these use recharable batteries good for about 6 month between charges), a 2T recorder, has Vehicle, Person, Face & Package Detection settings, voice to hear and speak to intruders, color Night Vision, built in sirens on each camera and speakers inside each camera, LED deterent (motion detection) lights built in, No Monthly Fees all data stored on local hd Western Digital PURPLE HD inside the recorder thats included, app send info and alerts to a cell phone or the app. etc..

I have a cheap Amazon solar camera that needs to be within range of WiFi; and it requires a cheap subscription to see any old videos; but it does offer the ability to look anytime live and speak through, and listen live.

I also have a Moultrie Mobile cellular camera, and an add on solar panel. I've never really been happy with the solar panel; as it doesn't plug very securely in, and squirrels and crows messing with it will unplug it. It also wasn't cheap; the solar panel and battery back internal to it cost as much as a brand new solar from factory, cell game camera. The advantage is you get alerts on action, and they are right there on the app; no need to log onto a website or anything.

Now; the camera is really to alert you of the problem. I've had LEOs say they can't use the pictures as evidence, and they won't investigate the pictures or video. I'm guessing they just don't want to put the work into a property crime?

The Moultrie Mobile is the EXO-WV, and I think it was $119 and another $59 for the solar panel.

There is a cellular camera on Amazon, Sehmua, or something, very affordable for a solar cell cam, $119 for 2 of them. Looks like they use the major cell providers, and it's $15/month. Big thing would be, how is the app? They claim live streaming too.

What you need is cooperative effort of neighbors to facilitate getting perpetrator arrested and charged with a crime. 90% of crime is committed by .001% or less of population. Take this one dude out of circulation and petty theft in a 5 mile radius will plumet. If law enforcement is too lazy to do their job after scumbag is caught red handed by a neighbor there's other ways.
I think I related this here not long ago but here's the way we handled what appeared to be a minor crime wave. Tools, tires, fuel and other things were disappearing and getting worse with time. After it became obvious sheriff was too busy to investigate, a few of us set up cameras similar to what you are considering. If someone was too far away to get there in a hurry when alerted, they called someone closer to go investigate. A couple of young teens were soon, caught but despite them naming who they were working for,the adults weren't arrested. Partly because underage are protected from subpoena to testify if parents so choose.
Things slowed down for a while then picked back up. I got an alert at locked gate 200 yards from a building where equipment and supplies are stored. When I arrived I took keys from his ignition, pistol off seat and turned his headlamps on. Right away he began running up the drive yelling get away from my *$@(! truck you *#@^. I yelled "hold-um",,,,,, we will be gone in a minute, we just stopped to whiz. With that the dogs were off down the drive barking and looking for what it is they need to herd. I don't think my dogs would attack a human but they will try to herd anything from a cow to fence post if I encourage them. And "push-um" causes them to ratchet it up. When he yelled that I better call "these &#@(* dogs off" I replied They aren't my dogs but I wouldn't "PUSH-UM",,,,,if I were you. By this time I'd used cordless drill to put holes in sidewalls of tires. Loaded dogs and we were gone. Early next morning I called sheriff to report a truck blocking access so that farm employees can't start working. Truck was towed and impounded. No more problems with things walking off.
