best case sealant-opinions

I need to ask if anyone can comment on their experience with this case sealant:

Permatexｮ Anaerobic Gasket Maker.

Using the sealant for 2 cycle engine cases, with exposure to gasoline and oil.

Is the old sealant fairly easy to remove from case flange? Are the case halves very hard to separate with this sealant?

I'm currently using the Permatex ultra grey, but am not sure this is the right sealant as it is not gasoline proof like the Anaerobic Gasket Maker.

I like anaerobic sealer and use it a lot on trany cases water pumps etc also use silicone the application difference is how much movement and gap the case half's in question is subject to.

If its a solid fit anaerobic is good but if its likely to twist or move or have a gap silicone is what I use, anaerobic is made for closely machined precise surfaces and silicone will bridge pretty well. I believe they are similar tolerance to gasoline probably anaerobic may be better suited.

Yes it scrapes off easily since it only dries where the case meets the excess can be wiped off even later on, probably easier to separate also. :thumbsup:

I use Loctite 515 and 518 anaerobic gasket eliminators a BUNCH. I use RTV and other silicones very seldom. Silicone and shifting housings will produce a leak quicker than the same hosings sealed with a gasket eliminator, IMHO.

Anerobic only sets up in the absence of oxygen. So if it is not a tight fit, it wont hold as well as RTV.

And of some oozes out inside the case, it wont set up like rtv and plug oil passages.

My main use for the anerobic is eliminating the base gasket on 2 stroke motors. It increases the squish a little and bumps the compression up some. It works excellent for that.

One of the applications I can think of that I wouldn't ever ever use anaerobic is a metal cover to steel or aluminum like an oil pan or valve cover it wouldn't work worth a crap no way no how where as silicone is probably the very best way cork/rubber gasket being a close second. (not solid rubber but the mix)

I'm not trying to convince anybody to change their ways. But I'm probably not going to change mine, either. My success rate in choosing sealants for situations is too high.

And "sealant' is a misnomer because a gasket is designed to seal on its own the "sealant" is something that is actually in 2 categorys one where it stands alone as in anaerobic or silicone rtv and the other plain old gasket, the sealant like high tack, tabors etc used as a tacking agent to hold a gasket in place they are all called sealants but that fact is debatable since they usually cause the "gasket" to squish out at the proper torque and silicone as well on that application is pure ignorance.

I agree with you. I've always used Yamaha's case sealant. It's always worked for me when joining crank case halfs together so I doubt I'll switch to something else unless I can't get it anymore. After all who wants to tear down an engine a second time because of a leak (in the case of a 2 stroke you have no choice but to fix it).

Thanks for the great info.

I've found this to work well recently, as a gasket dressing for two strokes (case to cylinder or case halves, or muffler gaskets) CRC KW Copper Coat (in the brush top cans).

Really tenacious and adhesive and gasoline proof unlike certain silicone RTV's, although how easy it is to clean off later for a rebuild is unknown.

Since the 60's or early 70's when ever Yamaha motorcycles came into this country I have used yamaha brand case sealer which at the time was called Yamabond!
Still use it although it's changed a bit but it applies easily, allows easy teardown and does not leak.
