The best part of my job, I don't have the one hour - each way commute any more!! I work from home, pretty much on my schedule. Although there is some travel, I get to visit some very interesting locations and get into parts of the buildings that most people never see. For instance - I have been inside of the vault of the federal reserve bank. By the way - they had LOTS of money!!!! And they made sure that no one left with any too!
Neat old buildings, museums, airports, dams, National Park property, prisons, missile silos and launch controls, super secret government buildings - and all of the hidden passageways, mechanical rooms and just cool things I get to see - truly amazing. Just a few weeks ago, I was at a dairy bottling plant. In the fill room, with six lines coming together with bottles and jugs flying by - looked like an episode of Modern Marvels.
Last year, we got a private tour of the old Missouri penitentiary. I got to sit on the gas chamber chair. I know, pretty bizarre - but I was there. Also stood inside of the cell that held Sonny Liston.
Because of my job, had a grand tour of a wide body L-1011, sat in the cockpit, rode the elevator down to the galley. Also, got a behind the scenes tour of Harry Truman's house, and presidential library. Spent days in closed / shuttered auto plants and just about any other type of building you can dream of (yes even hobo hotels - I will spare you those details - gross).
My wife has a pretty flexible work schedule - she also is based from home - so I do see her quite a bit more, which is also s great thing!!
The bad part - it does get a tad lonely. After I have looked at the jobs, I come home, do a take-off, then crunch numbers. Bid low enough to get it, high enough to make some money. And on bid days, it is very hectic.
But to combat the lonely times, our two dogs, the golden and the border collie are always there to keep me company.
