Uh oh!! I knew this would eventually happen!!! JMIII is trying to start the TBN Police, and he's trying to recruit our most beloved ex-policeman, Bird!!/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif The TBN Police will be prepared to solve any crime against a tractor!!!

"Just the facts, sir, and when did you notice your PTO shaft was bent?"

Paul, that is a good theory. The reason I found it was bent was when I went to hook it up to my tractor again a couple of nights ago, it was jammed in there so tight I thought I was going to bust something sliding it apart. So that was when I disassembled it and found it was bent.

But no, I didn't ever hear a bang when raising it, only when the shear bolt broke, and even that wasn't very loud.

Given the shallow angle of the driveshaft, i.e., it's almost flat, when connecting a rotary mower to a compact tractor, is it accurate to say that when raising the cutter, the driveshaft will hit the deck long before the driveshaft fully collapses?

Sounds like your neighbor is keeping up with the Jones'. He got the same mower but added the slip clutch to get ahead. This is the perfect opportunity for you to catch up. Work a deal with the dealer to upgrade to the slip clutch on your machine. It would be a real shame to let your neighbor out tractor you./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Brad, I’m sorry about your problems. You got me thinking about my own rotary cutter. I just got it about 10 days ago and I very carefully went through the procedures outlined in the owners manual to check for the proper length of the shaft. Since then I have added a hydraulic toplink and had I not read this post I might not have thought to re-check everything with the new toplink. I have 8 inches of travel on the new toplink versus about 4.5 inches on the factory toplink so there could be quite a difference. I hope I can find the the time this weekend to re-check everything.

I have been struggling to get the PTO shaft to telescope in and out.

Shouldn't the PTO shaft telescoped in far enough to prevent bending initially as well as providing adequate clearance for any position on the 3ph ?

Re: Bent PTO shaft - Update

Well, the dealer came out tonight to look at my bent shaft. He looked at it for a minute then went to his truck, pulled back the tarp, and pulled out a brand new shaft. He installed it and I fired it up, no more sheared bolts, no more problems. He then stayed for about 10 more minutes and we looked the tractor over real close to make sure we couldn't find any other problems while he was there. Everything was just fine. We raised the cutter to its highest position, the driveline didn't come close to hitting. I guess the first time the top link must have been extended all the way for it to hit. I mowed about 3 acres with it tonight.

So I must say I am very pleased with my dealer tonight. No pointing fingers (by either of us) and no questions asked. He just made it right.

Thanks to all of you who gave advice and opinions the last couple of days.

Brad, attached is a picture from the Woods manual that shows the differences between a shear bolt and slip clutch drive shaft. It looks like the only external difference is the clutch shield, Part 28.

Thanks Mike.

This might turn out to be a funny story. I say might because I don't know the ending for sure yet. The original reason I had asked was because I saw that piece on my neighbor's and he said he had the shear bolt like mine. So I asked the dealer last night and he said he did have the shear bolt, identical to mine. I said I had noticed that piece and thought he might have had the slip clutch.

Well right before the dealer left, he asked me again what I had seen. He said that two cutters came in the same day, one w/ slip clutch, one w/o. That was the day before my neighbor's was delivered. The dealer (I call him the dealer because he owns the place and sold me my tractor) didn't sell or deliver to my neighbor, one of the salesmen did.

The funny part was, as soon as he left my house, I saw him turn up my neighbor's driveway. I believe the salesman delivered the wrong cutter! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I kind of feel sorry for my neighbor, but now I know why I was confused originally. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

So the final outcome of all this is;

1. You get a brand new driveshaft at no charge.
2. Your neighbor gets a bill for a slip clutch.

Uh Oh looks like neighbor Jones just got busted. Wonder if he will keep the slip clutch.
