Wearing a wide brimmed hat for sun protection and ear muff type protection are not very compatible. Bought a set of behind-the-head ear protectors and use them with ear buds to listen to the radio. I find they are not very comfortable and was wondering what others are using to protect hearing, listen to the radio, and allow the use of a wide brimmed hat?

I tried a couple of different types that have a fixed wire band behind the head and found that with my short neck they sometimes rubbed and were uncomfortable. I just got a pair of Bilsom Viking V2 and they fit very well and can be worn in the "normal" position or under the chin as well.

I don't have any real hearing protection. I used to use the sport earbuds that go deeper in your ear. They blocks out the sound pretty well. But I just found a set of Sony Noise Reducing headphones in the thrift store. I wear a big brimmed cap with an ear and neck flap. My cap is really big, so I tried it over the headphones. It worked, but not very good. Today when I cut the front yard, I tucked the flaps under and used them over the cap. Not perfect, but it did work. The headphones do a good job with the mower noise, but the wind will send them {and your ears} for a spin.

I bought a pair of behind the head ear protection and though the metal band goes behind my neck the tops of the ear cups stick up high enough that I cannot put on any type of hat. It baffles me why they fit this way as they are a name brand and I am not crazy about spending more money trying out more multiple brands that may not fit also.....

Guess there are not any great solutions to this scenario. Wide brim hats and hearing protection don't mix well.

Another option is to find (make) a sunhat that has a split in the brim next to both ears. The ones that i use have a velcro fastener that you open put your ear protection through, seal the velcro and away you go. You can then use what ever ear protection you like. If you don't need ear protection you can seal the split and use as a normal sun hat.

Its the only thing that I have found works without causing issue either with sunhat or with ear protection.

Here is the link to the type that I have Neck Tie Coolers - Ultimate Outdoor Workers hat

I only use my over the ear muffs when wearing a baseball-style hat. When the wide-brimmed hat comes out, so do the ear plugs. I wear the foam plugs every day at work, so while I still don't particularly like them, I am used to them.

The noise isolating ear plugs and split brim hat sound like good ideas to try. Got a whole box of the foam inserts which I try to avoid because I find them uncomfortable and I can't listen to the radio with them.

Has anyone tried the Fuze ear molds for ear buds? molded earbuds | eBay.
