Beginning of Spring

   / Beginning of Spring #21
On the first day of spring here in Fairfield Vt. we were boiling sap and making maple syrup. Finished up with a nice tasting dark amber. Good with ice cream or anything else you can put it on. Mud season has started.
Bird your picture made me miss Jacksonville Fl. I was stationed there for 10 years and loved the barbeque down there. Also spoiled me for iced tea. Can't get good iced tea here.
Take care!
Headed for the sugar house for another round of boiling.

Whew, Thomas, that's too cool for me. I've had the doors and windows open since before daylight, and it's 77 now. And the ribs turned out very well; sure went good with the beans, Texas toast, cole slaw, garden salad, and a tray with pickled okra, dill pickles, bread & butter pickles, and olives. And after a couple of hours, a bit of the cake my wife made.:)
BIRD i used to like you now i am hungry and cold .:D temp 38 today and down to 15 tonight. so cold and wet still do not have the yard cleaned up.

Alan, I've only visited New England briefly one time, but I did buy some of that maple syrup while we were there, and I've found it in some stores in other parts of the country, but tapping trees and boiling sap isn't something that's done in this part of the country, unfortunately.

ScottVT:
Did you come down RT 8 to get to Bridgeport? If you did you could have stopped in at our Ct home, door is always open when not in Vt !

Hey, Scott- yes; but since I had a small trailer, Rob's directions took me down 95 to Bridgeport, then up Rte 8 to Shelton. Same rte on the way back. Don't much like driving in cities, but the weather was sunny and traffic not too bad. Lucked out, though-- bad accident on northbound lane near B-port on the way down- sailed right by. On the way back, same area, ANOTHER bad accident on SOUTH lane-- sailed right by again! Traffic was stopped & backed up for 2 miles each time. First time I've managed to miss 'em like that!

I would have loved a break in CT and to meet you. Perhaps when you come back to up "God's Country"?

Bird- it's 15 degrees this AM, wind's howling... At least my dirt road will be solid!:D

Glad I'm not there.:D The wind's almost howling here, too; south at 25 mph gusting to 32 (an hour ago, gusting to 38), but the temperature is 66.:) Lots of clouds blowing in and a 50% chance of rain and severe thunderstorms forecast for tonight and tomorrow. I'm hoping for rain, but sure don't want any damaging storms.

So yesterday was the "official" first day of Spring. Of course, I've already mowed my yard 3 times this "spring".:D And I've applied fertilizer.

This is just plain wrong. I can't believe what I'm reading! ;) Although yesterday I did see liquid water.

Bird, I wasn't kidding about early spring out here.
On Sunday our weather went from the mid 70's to 40F for one day? It rained an inch and we had snow on the hills. Right now it's back up to 66F and later this week it's supposed to get 78 or 80F. I was going to post some photos on my Log Home thread but here are a couple photos of our place right now. The first photo shows some flowers Loretta planted along our rock wall, but the others are all wild flowers.
Rob-

That is sure pretty, Rob. You've got a real nice place.

The Red Buds flowered last week and are looking really good. Dogwoods are about to bust open. The Daffedils my aunt sent from ALA started to flower TODAY. Very pretty. So far the deer have not touched them. Though they were eyeballing the Lillies last night. The deer are cruising through the yard eating the grass that has greened up.

The car accident has put me way behind on chores. The garden still has not been prepped for planting. Our average last freeze is 4/15 so I have a bit of time. Its going to be a busy spring.

In another week or so the brush and trees will have budded out and the clear views through the woods will be gone. In some places you can't see 15 feet once the leaves pop out.

Later,
Dan
